The fourth of the Mike Lucas 100s series was flown at ferry Meadows on Sunday, 21st of June.  16 pilots turned out to fly and we were greeted with light winds and sunshine.  As we drove onto the field we noticed logs placed in the field for what we now know is an overflow car park for the paying customers at ferry Meadows.  As luck would have it the wind was in the right direction and we could fly the comp as long as it was not actually used for a car park. We started the comp as early as we could at around 10.15 AM and decided not to stop for a dinner break in case they used this overflow parking area.  As this area seems to be here to stay, flying is going to be a problem if the wind is in an awkward position or they use the area for parking.  If anyone knows of a suitable field for these comps could they please let me know as soon as possible as I think ferry Meadows may become a no fly area for us in the future.

Round one started and the flying was a pleasure with light winds, times were not brilliant but everyone was enjoying themselves.  I managed 7.38 to win my slot, a much better start than the last competition I flew.  Round two and three were flowing nicely until Richard Yates launched his tracker, as it reached the top of the line it touched another line and the nose cone complete with battery and servers came out, it was now dangling down and swinging backwards and forwards under the rest of the model. With no controls at all we watched and waited for the inevitable, but after a few seconds the model settled down in a gentle turn, after five or six turns the model sat down gently just outside the landing area, there was no further damage to model and his flight time was recorded as one Min with no bonus.

Round four slot four Neville had a mid air with Chris Edwards, Neville’s model survived but Chris was not so lucky and his model came down into a bush.  I was also flying in this slot and found lift low down, Neville came over to join me and made me work hard for the 1000 points, his model was not performing well due to the early damage and he landed a few seconds early.  This now meant Neville and myself went into round five with equal scores for the first four rounds.  To make it even more interesting we were flying against each other in the same slot for the final round.  Kevin Newitt was also flying with us and he was just above us in the table. We all found lift and it was down to the landing Kevin and I managed 7.53 but Neville launched a couple of seconds later and scored 7.48

Winners of the day were,

First place David Varah who constantly flew well throughout the competition finding low level lift and worked it well earning himself the full 5000 points

Second place was Kevin Newitt who scored a very impressive 4998 points

Third place was myself with 4922 points

A very enjoyable day’s flying for me and I hope for everyone else. Let’s hope the weather continues throughout the summer

Thank you to all who helped set up and dismantle the field and thank you to Neville for the use of his equipment as usual. The next comp is on the 19th of July. At the moment its at ferry Meadows but if a suitable alternative field can be found I will make sure all competitors know beforehand. anyone wishing to enter can do so by contacting Alan Morton on 07986 238172 or email 4mortons at TalkTalk.Net
