The forecast was very accurate for the weekend, with the Saturday being the best day & spent at Old Warden doing some FreeFlight, whilst the Sunday, although being warm plus slightly overcast, was plagued by these continuous strong winds, that we seem to have at the present time. At least it was from the South, so made the landing somewhat easier as there was no curl overfrom the trees that lie upwind in that direction.
There were 13 entries on the day in the event one never turned up leaving 12 to fly. As most of the models had been processed in the past & had there sticker to prove it, we were able to dispense with the checks on the day & get on with the Round 1, without a briefing, as most flyers were aware of the site & flying rules. Motor run time was agreed on 25 seconds, to see how this worked out in practice with the wind at approx 12/14 mph.
First casualty was not due to the wind, as Peter Sainsbury managed to get the prop, to chop off the top two joints of his Tx aerial, so had to withdraw.
There were 3 people who flew the first slot out of Round 1, but after that no one managed it in the subsequent slot of the first 4 Rounds, up to a break for lunch taken at 12.30 to see if the wind would ease as forecast.
Jason managed a terminal job on his Cularis, far beyond the realms of what cyno could cope with & withdrew after 3 Rounds, as did George Read after Round 4. George’s day was made though, by beating Brian in Round 3.
Round 5 started at 1.30 pm, with the wind having eased somewhat coupled with the sun breaking out strongly, with the result that the flight times went up accordingly. Ray Gadenne, who had not broken 5 minutes on his previous 4 flights returned times of over 9 minutes, for the last 3 flights!!
We could have flown 8 rounds as the 7th was finished by 3pm, but as most people were content with the day’s flying, the scores were finalised and prizes presented. See full results below, but the winner was Paul Wainwright, 2nd Brian Austin, 3rd Keith Fisher & 4th Rod Potts
One big observation is that the re-fly rule has made for a much more interesting comp, in as much as you are not out of it if you have a poor first attempt, but you do need a good time keeper who is aware of what you need to do & what the others in your slot have done or need to do, to win the slot or just to get a better score.
Next Bartlett’s event is on 16th August
