Petrborough Winter Series Round 2

After loading the car in the rain and seeing the weather forecast I was half expecting to arrive at the field only to return home due to bad weather, but the rain stopped and the wind was not too bad. We set out the field in the usual way but had a slightly later start than usual, around 10.45, due to not being allowed more than 2 vehicles on the field. For those that had to leave there cars in the car park we do apologise Due to the bonfire display last weekend the entrance of the field was cut up slightly, and after the rain on Saturday night the rangers decided not to open the gates.

Round 1 started and as promised the wind increased considerably. The top flight time for round 1 slot 1 was Kevin Newitt with 7.49 mins, my 100s model struggled to keep up and I had to settle with 6.35 mins. The rest of round 1 saw poor flight times with only 1 above 5 mins.

Round 2 and the wind was still increasing flight times were no better and landings were suffering with 10 zeros throughout round 2.

By round 3 five of the 17 pilots had scratched, we had a vote and decided to continue with the remaining 12 brave souls. The wind was now 13-15 mph but gusting up to 19.6 mph. Neville Warby managed to score a 1000 points with 2.27 mins and no bonus! which just shows how rough the weather was. The rest of round 3 was much the same and we decided to call it a day while we still had models to take home.

Most pilots seemed to enjoy the day, but I think everyone was happy to stop at round 3.

The overall winners were;

Joint 1st place with 3000 each Pete Newitt and Dave Varah

3rd place was Neville Warby with 2829

Top 100s was Alan Morton with 2437

Thanks to all who helped on the day especially to the south Lincs crew, Graham Gilliatt, William Watson and Simon Vaitkevicius who always set out the perimeter warning tape and also the warning signs. Also a big thanks to Neville Warby for providing all his equipment as well as helping to run the comp.

Next comp is on the 14th December 2008 at Ferry Meadows all entries to Alan Morton email 4mortons at talktalk.net or Tel; 07986238172

Lets hope the weather for the December comp is favourable.

Alan Morton
