Radiglide-SLG 2009

Conditions at March Gibbon for the BARCS rules SLG comp at Radioglide 2009 were almost ideal. The sun was out most of the time and the wind generally was quite light. Clouds and overcast did come along, bringing with it colder and gusty periods which made for a testing competition.
A usual mix of models, both in span and weight were flown. Mostly of Ukrainian type origin but Brian Austin flew his extremely competitive own design/build model. The CD started the comp shortly after 3pm and 6 rounds were flown with 5 counting towards the final result. Motor run time was set at 22 seconds as experience has shown that the 200W formula gives a 3mtr span model a launch height in the region of 600/700ft. but also allows smaller heavier wing loading models to climb higher, giving them an equal chance at the glide task.A few competitors requested that their models be checked for compliance with the power to weight rule, and this was quickly carried out along with an adjustment being made on just one model.
The first 3 rounds were flown in a mixture of strong lift and equally strong sink which meant that good thermal flying was the requirement. The erratic wind conditions made accurate landing less than easy, but no one suffered a penalty for overflying the slot time.
After 3 rounds a break was called to allow recharging and most took advantage of the time for a quick top up.
The final 3 rounds were then flown, and they were equally as testing as the first 3. Unfortunately during round 5 a midair collision between models flying a long way off in the same thermal removed two possible contenders from the winning spot, and Brian Austin proved the eventual very worthy winner.
My thanks to all those who took part, both as competitors and helper/timers etc. Especially to Tony Beckett who spent his afternoon scoring for us, and who posted the scores earlier.
