How to make an attempt at a Record
There are just a few basic rules:-
1. Models must conform to current FAI specifications with regards to weight, maximum size, and loading limits.
2. There are two classes of flight – SLOPE start & THERMAL start.
a. THERMAL – models must either, be hand launched or launched on a hand tow-line not exceeding 150m, or a bungee not exceeding 150m unstretched, or a power winch with the turnaround pulley fixed 150m maximum from the winch.
b. SLG – models must be handed launched or R.O.G. under power.
c. THERMAL and SLG models must be launched at a distance not less than 2 miles (3.2Km) from obvious slope lift.
d. SLOPE – models must be hand launched direct from the slope.
a. THERMAL and SLG DURATION – The landing must be within 75m of the launch point.
b. SLOPE DURATION – The landing must be within 75m of the launch point.
c. THERMAL and SLOPE DISTANCE –
(i) The landing must be within 150m of the pilot’s position at the time.
(ii) The landing may be at any point above the launch point, or, if below it, a height loss of not more than 100 feet per mile flown (30m per 1.6Km) will be allowed.
5. Distance Flights
a. All flights must be observed by a ‘navigator’ who must accompany the pilot from launch to landing.
b. Motor transport – car, pick-up truck etc., may be used to follow the model.
c. ‘Point to point’ Distance flown must be measured in a straight line from launch to landing, as given by the grid reference of the two points. Map numbers must be given.
d. ‘Goal and return’ Distance flown is measured as the distance in a straight line from the launch point to a nominated point and back again, as given by the grid reference of the two points. Map numbers must be given.
Members may make as many claims as they wish during the year. Claims must be submitted to the BARCS Records & Achievements officer, currently held by Hayley Hawes, and include witness name and BARCS/BMFA membership number.
7. Specific comments on the various records.
Thermal Duration ‘Open’ ‘100S’ ‘Classic’ ‘Vintage’ ‘Tail-less’
The model must comply with the model specification set out in the class rules in section 4 of the BARCS Handbook.
Thermal Duration ‘Mini-glider’
The model must comply with the model specification set out in the class rules in section 4 of the BARCS Handbook. The model may be launched by hand or by mini bungee, as specified in section 4 (rule 4.8.2)
Electric Thermal Duration ‘SLG’ Single flight
The model must comply with the model specification set out in the class rules in section 4 of the BARCS Handbook. Unlimited engine run/runs at any time during the flight.
Electric Thermal Duration ‘SLG’ Treble flight
The model must comply with the model specification set out in the class rules in section 4 of the BARCS Handbook. Three consecutive flights from single charge of motive power battery – model to be relaunched within 10min of previous flight – no limit to motor run on each of the 3 flights – Rx battery may be changed between flights.
Electric Thermal Duration ‘Open’ Electric
Model specification to comply with overall rules on weight and area etc (see section 4.7.4). No restrictions on motor, gearbox, battery. Engine run – restricted to a single run of max 2 mins at start of flight.
The model must comply with the model specification set out in the cross country rules in section 5 of the BARCS Handbook.
Distance – ‘Point to point’ Thermal or Slope
Is a one way flight from the launch point to the landing point.
Distance – ‘Goal and return’ Thermal or Slope
Is a two way flight from the launch point, to an overflown point nominated to the witness, and then back to within 150m of the launch point
‘Closed Circuit’ Course to be used
16 Km – 80m course – 100 laps x 160m
1.6Km – 80m course - 10 laps x 160m
1.0Km – 80m course - 10 laps x 100m
The course to be laid out as specified for ‘60” Pylon’ league in section 5.2
