martynk
A placeholder for the 4th 2M Hi-Start 14 day duration Challenge for 2020 Please submit your score below. The clock will start when the first score is submitted. This is a for fun challenge, anyone with a bungee-launched glider up to 2 metres wingspan and the standard Hi-Start can post a time. Object: Fly your 2 metre glider for as long as possible from a flat field, the person who's time is unbeaten for 14 days 'wins' and a new challenge starts. Rules: Launches must be made from the standard Challenge Hi-Start bungee. Flight times begin when line releases from the towhook and the model must land in the field for times to count. While the object is to encourage F3-RES types, any model up to 2 metre span may be flown (F3-RES, foam, full house aileron mouldie) but please state the type of model with your time. The standard Hi-Start bungee is a maximum of 10m of 6/4mm surgical tubing and 50m of static line (minimum 30lb breaking strain). Lighter/smaller bungee rubber may be used. Fly safely! Pete in Northiam
Ok I have hit go on the 4th challenge period. I managed a small PB yesterday, 30 July 2020, with a flight of 5min 1sec with my RES-Eagle. Seven launches at the Pevensey Levels field. Best flight bungeed to 55m in ~5mph breeze but I couldn't get off the line until 52m. Found nice thermal about 40m which I lost at 96m - my first decent ascent with this airframe - but didn't find another. Switch SF is my flight timer from release to landing. This was flying off the Tansoole 6mm x 4mm natural latex which I was short delivered (now refunded). There was one piece to make a 10m bungee from and I have to say it's more consistent and puncture proof than the earlier Tansole sample. The last silicone tubing sample arrived yesterday and looks very promising. Full test and results soon. Happy days! --Pete
cirrusRC
got out yesterday. Forecast was for better winds first thing and getting windier. Lift was pants first thing, even with the DLG it was a struggle to get away. Conditions seemed to improve as the day progressed. Between 2 and 2.30 the wind dropped and the lift was really good. Launched to 70 meters straight into lift and wound up to 300 meters, stayed around that height for around 20 minutes before hitting strong lift which was a real struggle to get down from. Sweaty hands and dry mouth told the story. Tried aerobatics, steep spins but not much worked other than high speed runs across the sky leaning on the elevator. Finally got it down to a decent height and then lost the lift. In good conditions the RES is a real joy to fly. I'd have gone quite a bit higher if there had been clouds, but against a blue sky 300 meters is a comfortable limit with a 2meter res. 400 meters and it starts to look pretty small without clouds and the contrast it gives you. I was flying too close to overhead for most of the flight which was uncomfortable. I'd zoom upwind every now and then to relieve the neck and find some different lift with the option of following it down wind if needed. Generally at that height the lift is so wide that you don't need to track it unless you suddenly hit a pocket of sink. Much more fun lower down and easier to see when the model is in lift. I go downwind with the RES far less often than with a DLG, purely because of limited penetration. At height its ok though as can put in speed mode and push forward, but low down its a dangerous game with a RES model
