Paulupton Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 Anybody with experience of flying dunes advise on the best landing option? Back side of slope very lumpy and I'm likely to want to fly here in big winds so a no go. What's happening at the bottom of the slope? How far would I need to push out from the slope to land on the beach? Typically f3f type models. Thanks
MikeE Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 Beach will be smooth all over. It may just suprise you though just how much lift you will get over the beach. Air is smooth so flying aling Criss wind isn't that tricky on the landing approach, especially as wind can often be crossed a little. You can quite easily launch off the beach. Try with a foamy, and throw directly into wind. Gain some height then come around to fly along the bottom of the slope. Turn out and you will be up and running.
Andy_B Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 The only major problem flying on the dunes in high winds Paul is salt and sand will get everywhere ....really need to look after your Tx 1
Phil.Taylor Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 For those dunes - land on the beach - preferably fly at low tide ! For bigger dunes - land on the top - with commitment - see video Have fun! Phil. 1
Paulupton Posted January 31, 2021 Author Posted January 31, 2021 Thanks. It was an offshore wind today so didn't think about the potential for a sand storm. We've been there in the past and it's been difficult with the kids and the blowing sand on the beach.
f3fman Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 Reminds me of beach flying before our Viking Race in Norway, Iain Rose and Dave Woods, and the subsequent T-shirt, I bet they can find photos if they try hard enough ? 1
wookman Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 I would imagine the lift would work a long from the dune on a big air day. Having flown a small twenty foot seawall in a howling gale I found that there was a fairly low ceiling but that I could range over a large part of the beach at that height. 1

I remember it well. Late in the evening doing rolls along the dunes and Iain standing in the water with his back to the sea and catching his Ellipse 1. If he had missed it would have gone straight into the water. David. 1 1
GuyB Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 Dune flying is my favourite form of slopping. Lift is so smooth and, as others have said it extends a long way out. Plus you have amazing views. If you are ever near Padstow, Constantine bay is very good. I fly early or late in the day in the Summer when the beach is empty for safety reasons. re landing, the beach is good and catching the model on the dune itself is possible because the winds and lift is usually so consistent. 1

I really wish I had the photos....... the landing/catch was way less risky than the site for the final day of the competition! 1
