DIY wing/tail bags advice

I've been looking to make my own for an Xplorer2 and it has been suggested to use car window sun protectors (thank you

Nigel Taylor) as some have a foam backing inside and seem thin/light.

I've been looking online at the ToolStation store and they have these:

https://www.toolstation.com/ybs-general-purpose-thermawrap-insulation/p16779?store=DB&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=googleshoppingfeed&mkwid=s_dc&pcrid=515847200342&pkw=&pmt=&gclid=CjwKCAjw5c6LBhBdEiwAP9ejG89BtoVudqT72rD6aNyJPzc-7CMXokhOqvvmQid4JkNTQ5tP5EfbfRoCfmAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#full-desc

Would this do the trick? Gafa tape the seems?

Any advice welcome

Many thanks

Dont use that stuff - it will mark the wings.

What you need is floor insulation - also sold as radiator reflector foam - (and windscreen shields) - soft plastic foam on the inside, silver on the outside - its very similar to whats used for the posh manufacturers bags. Floor insulation is 3mm thick, radiator foam is 2mm. Use silver duck tape to stick it together.

Its been discussed before - I will try & find the links

and heres a couple of photos - and hints on how to make them...
Simple as possible - just 1x overlap for the join - overlap about 3cm wide
when taping the join - use lots of small pieces (2cm sq) of duck tape to get it together, before long pieces along the join - on a curve you will need to cut the overlap in a few places depending on the curve. Probably quicker to make than describe - well, after the first couple anyway!

Don't leave them in a car in direct sunlight though.  The glue on the tape softens and the bags fall apart leaving sticky deposits over the models and the upholstery - don't ask how I know that.  So I now use Dave Jones' (RIP) old technique from QFI about 20 years ago of cutting the bubble wrap insulation about an inch too wide and using a steel ruler as a heat sink.  Employ a heat gun to melt the two edges together back up to where you place the steel ruler.  Wear welding gloves when doing it though!

If you use aluminium tape to stick the joints the sun does not affect the glue and the job looks better too!

I received a sample piece (and silver tape from my local shop) from the link you gave Phil. It's perfect for the job, thx m8 👍

I hope this means you're getting close to having your Xplorer ready for a bit of slope soaring? Be nice to take a trip out somewhere and go fly together.
