Redbird Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 If you have ever lusted after one of these - 'Gizmo' 36 and 2m from Tim Buckland in Australia, as I have, then you might be interested to know that a clever guy has designed two similar 1.2m versions for 3d printing. Files are on Cults3D, very cheap at the moment and there is a thread on RCgroups. Look up 'Mizmo and Manta'. The Mizmo flies great, cant speak for the Manta just yet. Great vid on Youtube, look up 'Mizmo strong maiden'.
Ian F3F Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 your own 3D printed version has impressed me every time I've seen it. just looks fun! 2
GeoffN Posted January 14, 2023 Posted January 14, 2023 I printed a flying wing sloper design from Thingiverse. It flew very well . But I found it to be quite fragile .most probably my printer settings .I use an Ender3. Any suggestions for printer settings.
Redbird Posted January 27, 2023 Author Posted January 27, 2023 Was it the 'Proteus' Geoff? I made and flew one of those, still have it but a bit hairy to fly. The larger version still hasn't flown, broke it launching more than once. The Mizmo flies a treat, I'll have another lighter one for Sunday. Putting together a 60" version next and a Manta.
Redbird Posted February 6, 2023 Author Posted February 6, 2023 Latest off the press. Flying nicely but now waiting to fly with less nose lead. First one had a clear nose section from three year old pla with camera flash strobes inside for visibility. Hit several stones with landings and nose has shattered somewhat. The fluoro green (Ziro filament) on my second one seems a lot tougher. Also trying out cheaper smaller servos. All up weight about 745gm. 1
Redbird Posted February 6, 2023 Author Posted February 6, 2023 Does this thread belong here do you think, or would it be more apprpriate in a different forum on Barcs?
MikeE Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 If the print remains fragile, would it be feasible to print without the 'cover' layer and cover with something else. An option could be to use 1/64 ply around the nose and D box, and perhaps balsa or just film for the rest. Or even print without the 'cover' layer just around the nose and D box area. I can understand why you might want to keep the model pure 3d print, but the final model may benefit from a more composite approach.
Redbird Posted February 7, 2023 Author Posted February 7, 2023 Quite right Mike. Covering with other materials may be required in part but the designer (Geode) has allowed for extra material as well as carbon, to be incorporated in the vulnerable. We'll see how they hold up to abuse. It is a strong design that will evolve. 1

GeoffN Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 Proteus On 27/01/2023 at 20:51, Redbird said: Was it the 'Proteus' Geoff? I made and flew one of those, still have it but a bit hairy to fly. Yes was a Proteus. The spare only extends out to the servo bays so leaves the outer wing unsupported. The p51 airofoil version was fast but the outer wing folded in high speed tignt turn. aided by my bad printing. It took about a week to print. Also the remains of the model partiality melted in the back of the car on the way home from the slope. A model for the winter months. Golf club shafts and epp for me. 1
Redbird Posted February 8, 2023 Author Posted February 8, 2023 Better luck next time! If you can be bothered the Mizmo is delightful.
