November 2023 'Special' postal

Thanks for the explanation

Not a problem how you present the information, I just need to understand what I am seeing.  I much prefer a proper timer than trying to read from a graph.

Thanks

Well done Anthony for winning the inaugural 'Special'.

Pin this to the wall

A few more entries would have been nice, but probably not the best time of the year to hold a special.

However, I think that it proves that the format would work for a monthly postal if there is sufficient interest.

A couple of points.

F5L - nobody read the rules. The flight is launch to land less 20 seconds, Not engine cut to land. The reason for this is to compensate for the F3L pilots who are rather stuck at the point their time starts.

I think that if we run this again or adopt as a monthly then the start time for the slot must be either o'clock or half past  (any hour).  This is to try and make it a bit more disciplined as per a normal slot based contest.

However, I would really welcome others thoughts on this. I am happy to run the event providing there is enough interest.

We could run it Monthly (like the current postal) or 6 monthly events through the spring/summer, ad-hoc or something else.  Please suggest.

Any thoughts or suggestions? We also need a name for the event as well.

Really sorry Martyn, the low participation was probably me doing 25:29 right at the start. Many would have put off entering a lower score, thinking they would do a better one later. Then it did not happen.

Far more interesting (to me) was the non-entry on the 25th. There was also someone else flying that day (Norman Turner). The better flights were all but identical – in the lift / sink pattern that we got, as shown on our charts.

I don't know where Norman is, but here there was a full “Mackerel Sky” bordered each side with heavy long grey clouds. This sky (here) is the calm before the storm (usually very lifty) and then we had a few days of the actual storm.

My first flight was at “best trim” (6:00 dead) and then as I said I did trim changes, each one more detrimental to the duration, until the really bad one in the middle.

I then started to undo the changes and as I did, they reverted to the same duration as previously in that state. Finally it was back at the best known trim state – well >5:50 is near enough. One of the flights got messed up (early cut) but the sink rate still fit the patern.

Amazing that in good air and good trim it held level or went up slightly. In poor trim, you can hardly see any good air. It was at the start and the end, so one must assume it was there in the middle.

The “Mackerel Sky” and no wind were superb. It could have been just a still flat day and the duration would have been less, but I am certain the results would have followed just the same.

My time was only 25:29 out of a potential 30:00 – so I could have done much better. In fact had someone posted a better score, the temptation to go for 5 x 6mins would have proven too much.

I posted this because there just has to be others who do the same (or not) – but if you do, where on earth do you post about it, to discuss your findings ?
