EVENT CANCELLED

Having looked at the forecast for Saturday, unfortunately we are going to cancel this event.   The strength of the wind will  be too much for these lightweight models.

I will look for another date.

Introduction:

This event will be at Invicta Club’s field at Sutton Valence.  Competition will start at 10:00 (so be there by 09:30 please) and aim to finish at 14:00.

So, this is a “for fun” challenge for Kent Interclub pilots with the aim of expanding interest in silent flight and to help pilots improve their thermal soaring skills.  What if my foamie is a bit bigger then 2-metre?  Whilst this event is aimed at 2-metre models, we may be able to work something out – just contact us.

The rules are simple to enable relaxed qualifying flights.  One sight change to the rules will be a designated landing area/box  for safety reasons.   Don’t be put off if you don’t have a compliant bungee or Height-limiter, as these can be borrowed/shared on the day.

Entries and Competition updates (and cancellation info) will be via this BARCs site post

Location: Invicta’s club field is at Sutton Valence, Maidstone, Kent.  Please follow attached detailed directions below to find the field:

  • From Sutton Valence take the A274 heading south
  • As you approach the bottom of the hill go past Forsham lane on the RHS until you see the bus stop also on the RHS
  • Immediately past the bus stop is the farm gate with a lane.  Please close the gate afterwards
  • The field we will be using will be signposted from the lane.
  • Using What3Words (phone app) bus stop & gate has location bells.starch.affirming
  • https://goo.gl/maps/GdJY6skGkwdioPrd6   Google map location  51.205708773885256, 0.5908192559640718

Objectives:

The aim is fly your model glider 10 times over a 4-hour period with the aim of flying for 6 minutes in each flight.

The best 6 flights flight times will be entered as your score.  Points are awarded for every second flown. Max points 360.

Landing in prescribed area.

Qualifying Models:

Anyone may enter with models that conform to the following:

  • Construction - Built-up balsa and foamie models
  • Wingspan - Models must have a wingspan of no more than 2-metres.
  • Controls - Rudder, Elevator and ailerons and spoilers are allowed,
  • If model has flaps these can only be used for brakes – camber changing must be switched off.

Launching

  • Glider – Identical hi-starts (bungee) are to be used to give a consistent launch.  The hi-start is comprised of a rubber tube of 15 (± 0.2) metre length, a nylon towline of 100 (± 1.0) meter length with a minimum diameter of 0.7 mm and a pennant attached in proximity of metal tow ring.
  • Electric – Models must be fitted with an altitude height-limiter set to 100m and 30 seconds of power.  The device simply plugs in between the ESC and the receiver and most can be easily set for 100m

Heads-up.   At present the weather forecast is looking quite windy for Saturday for this type of competition.

We will wait until 18:00 today and will post here a decision as to whether the comp will go ahead.

It's the right call, IMO. Sad for you guys, but broken models suck.

Yes good call. My forecasts for Saturday at Invicta are for 6-7 metres per sec gusting 15. The FAI FxL limit is 8 but I've nothing strong enough. Here's what happened at 6m/s last week at Buckminster landing a PuRES carrying 135g of ballast. I was not alone!
