Phil.Taylor Posted March 16, 2022 Share Posted March 16, 2022 Extreme turbulence = broken plane Unfortunately - the rather excellent Vantage flight in the previous video did not end well. Its a 500ft clifftop site - fantastic lift out front, with a nice flat field to land in - but theres a really big nasty rotor / turbulence to get through before landing. The trick is to fly well back, dive through the rotor, then a final low-level approach crossways - anything near the slope edge & the rotor accelerates the plane back out again (got this on an old video). The FS4.3 landing was fine on the previous video - rocky but got down ok - its on the end of that video. What I hadnt realised on the Vantage flight was that the wind had got up from 20mph to 30mph - and was going crossed from the left - there's a valley there - going around there to collect the wreckage was very blowy. Net result was extreme turbulence - behind the rotor - totally unexpected - too fast to be able to correct it. Radio problems? - dont think so - I've watched the raw video frame by frame - there are no aileron deflections visible to cause that sudden roll to inverted. Airspeed? - was fine at the start of the approach - flaps/CROW to loose height - then cleaned up to come forwards into the field - then BAM ! Lesson learned the hard way - 20mph maximum wind on that slope/clifftop - even with a great photo/video opportunity. No chance of a new fuselage - CCM are/were in Ukraine - its going to be repair time again - sometime in the future... Phil. 5 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The rotor is mainly over the front half of the landing field - then there's turbulence behind it - have a look at the previous video - about 5:05 - FS4.3 diving though it to level out & land The crash approach was too far back - hadnt realised the wind increase cos where you stand when flying - just back from the cliff edge - its in the rotor - you feel no wind Phil. There is a sign of aileron deflection on one frame as it goes 90 degrees - opposite aileron as I was trying to correct it - I remember there being very little (no) response - presumably the turbulence caused a total loss of airspeed as well as the crazy roll. I guess in that angle you wouldn't see a deflected flap, also flap would probably retract fine once the model slowed a little and the back pressure reduced. Looked to me like you had reasonable air speed to cope with turbulence at that height, but I guess if the wind direction was crossed in relation to the approach then it could be the cause. So sad to see a new model broken, but at least it should be a simple fix back to as good as new, and no important bits damaged. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
