Thanks pete.It could be just the way the links are pasted on to the forum.I notice the link to the BARCS annual flyin displays the same on here but works ok when clicked.I took my link from the home page of the website(selected and copied the www. bit in the address box.) and yes if you type in www.patteakle...co.uk it does not work for me either in the address plane of Internet explorer.

 

Anyway back to the point in question..Having thought about it over night I think its a good thing as long as they can get enough customers ,obviously, and dont make it look too specialised as it intimidates a lot of people who are used to point and click buying.Cheques and bank transfer for most would be a pain I suspect but its a start.I for one will probably be a customer at some point in time.

My fond memories of the original kits,which were around the £100 mark 25yrs ago and were very basic and just put in a poly bag for sale at the shows.To be fair they left a lot of work to do by the customer and choice of hardware was a bit intimidating to say the least.In those days I was not up to the moddelling task(skill wise on my part)and have only in the last 5yrs or so been building up my teakle stock for present and future (retirement)projects.I am sure most  people will appreciate the pedigree of these kits and not be put off by the  £300-£400+ price tag and once compaired to  a £500+ chinese kit ,all be it covered in film, will appreciate a properly made fuselarge which can take some abuse without cracking like an eggshell.

 

Their very nature of appearing for sale ,even in various states of repair,is testament to their construction as I cannot see the eggshell and balsa offerings at present from china being arround in 30yrs,Just my oppinion I must add.

 

Best of luck to Bill in his new venture and thanks again Pat for the original idea thats kept me longing for one for over 25yrs or so.

Still no canopies for my Vega and it's now 2yrs on¿

I have tried Pat Teakle model and the Vacuum forming man. 

Are we sunk on this issue?

Teakles the keep flying to the front with the aid of spares from Bill Hose whose website Pat Teakle gliders will show lots of lovely kit. My canopy the is o start it's way 6 for £35+.

1.

My Vega  was flying beautifully at Ringstead, Dorset: all fully checked out.All oof a sudden right aileron came adrift, ( ancient and diamond TAPE?). IT PLUNGED VERTICALLY SOME 156FT, AND NOTE FIRST!The wing joiner bar iI havethis case was bent, and the canopy shocked but all other bits survived

Vega, Images pleased to say that Bill Hosie of Pat Teakle is still supplying these canopies.

My previous canopy demised when I lost an aileron at Ringstead, Dorset this year.  The model went from 20 knots level flight 200ft up to 200mph plus at the bottom of the slope.

The impact into a field of grazing sheep to

1. turn their heads, I couldn't catch their comment s.

2. Break a brittle yellowed canopy

3. Bend the wing spar, which in my early example is a 10mm dia steel rod. 

 

QUESTION:

How does one stick the new canopy to the 5mm ply black cockpit cover/access hatch? 

A heat glue gun will not penetrate, the outside edge of the plastic canopy is the bottom edge of the cockpit cover.

PS  There as a " Pat Teakle day"  at Selsey Bill last year, on 16th March,  the 3rd Sunday, the flying conditions were said to be perfect, 15mph and wall to wall sun!

Could this be a job for... Canopy Glue?

I hadn't heard of it until a fortnight ago.

It's perfect for canopies!

Dries clear, and washes off with water if you don't get it right first time. 

Well known auction site is where I bought mine. Don't pay more than £5 inc delivery.

Dear Contributors to the Teakle revival thread:

1.

Fixing the replacement canopy bought from"patteakleglid er s" was muchneasier than I'd imagined.

Therenwere no fixing suggestions issued with it. Its supplied with complex curves at for and aft which prevent its being placed on the modle to scribe cuts; it also has miulding flat flange b all around its base.

I popped the ply cockpit into the moulding marking my cutting line closely to the underside edge of the ply: then got busy with my small gas soldering iron fitted with its flat knife edge. This followed through the thermoplastic all around the underside of the ply easily. Slight swelling up of the plastic was trimmed off with a sharp blade.

Surprisingly, the canopy was now held quite well into its cockpit former. I chose to drill a few miniature titanium screws through drilled pilot holes and CA  around the tight fit plastic to former. Job done.

PatTeakleGliders Bill Howsie was the only outlet to respond to my please for this replacement canopy.  Well done Bill but concernjng fornthe future of these lovely craft.

 

2.

FrankS    with your Vega kit will yiu stay with the standard spoilers through wings arrangement or fit trailing edge flaps as discussed elsewhere in this site?

 For me: Im4 hapoy with the stsndard "keep it in class" thro' wing spoilers. Even with my vertical dive to earth, reported earlier they survived.

My wing spar is rod, I see from the plan that later medels are laminatiins of flat steel.

 I think the rod caused less damage to the wing ( thin walled brass tube lines my wings for the joiner rod). A flat rectagular joiner woukd more likely bust out the wing pockets, methinks!

Tony, I'll probably go with the trailing edge flaps like my HP18, they work well and are useful when aerotowing to add some drag to stop the glider from catching the tug up!. Not going to go complicated like the full size though and have trailing edge flaps/brakes, crow will do for me.

I will go with the flat steel joiner, it's worked well on my HP18 which has had a couple of arrivals in it's time with no damage. Friend also had a PT Salto which he stalled in from 20+ft, was a good 9" into the ground, wings had come lose but the flexibility of the joiners saved the day, we could have just pushed the wings back on a flown again.
