RamJam 53
Hope Roy doesn't mind my input. How big is your Van Phil? A VW t5 is about as large as you could get down Braygate Lane without blocking the Farmers access. You may have to reverse out.The North slope at Hole of Horcum (if that is the Northish one being talked about?) can be gained by either following what looks like a sheep track to the right when you go through the gate at Horcum. Or from the South slope patch you can trudge straight through the Heather behind you for about 100yds to the North slope. As far as I'm aware it is open access land. Royski
RamJam 53 all input welcome mate, you are right the north slope is directly behind the southern slope and overlooks Fylingdales (it is actually best with a little east - NE), parking in the road side pay & display, if you display your NYMRSC card you don't need to payRoy

Cheers Roy Incidentally, on the last day of my HoH camping trip I spent the whole day with the paraglider lads, great bunch, very friendly and chatty, and of course we have a lot in common, a very welcome change from the Nont Sarahs hostility. I flew only between their sessions, by choice, they were happy to fly with a model up but to me its not worth the risk. The winds were light and the lads were really scratching which made it all the more enjoyable. Several probable land-outs were avoided by the arrival of an opportune bit of breeze, and I was even able to help one of them who wanted flying photos of the paraglider he was selling. They refer to them as 'gliders' by the way! Cheers Phil
Nightshade
Hi gents, Are you still getting out to Baildon and nearby? The bug has bitten me again, now that it's dark and wet all the time.
Royski
Baildon & Horcum, although last few weeks have been difficult with the wet/foggy weather
Nightshade
Great to hear that. Looks pretty windy for the next week or so.
RamJam 53
Wind is good. Swift fully repaired after taking off by itself at Horcum Yesterday. What gliders do you fly Nightshade.
Nightshade
Oh, nothing really suited for the slope. I have a radian and a thunder tiger, but I'm just a novice - self taught and only ever flown alone. The others in this thread were kind enough to point out some local sites. I may try take a glider out if it dries out sometime soon
RamJam 53
We all start somewhere. I had the Radian Mk1 and the Pro. I preferred the Mk1 as I could catch thermals all day with that. As I became more experienced I found that the Mk1 Radian could easily handle winds of 12-15mph on the slope. The Pro was better on the slope of course but not as good for thermal catching. I built an Amigo 4 from a kit for the lighter days at Baildon, Jap tissue covered as well. I have the more exotic stuff as well but still miss my Radian Mk1. I see they brought them back into production which says a lot for the design. Might catch you at Baildon sometime.

Phil_G
I've had a couple of really pleasant days at Nont Sarahs recently, we've had a few southerlies. I've yet to try the west slope at Baildon, both times I've called in its been south or flat calm! Out of interest is anyone following the development of Weather Permitting ? Committee Member Nick Jackson Posted May 31, 2016 Committee Member Share Posted May 31, 2016 I'll be holidaying in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales (near Bainbridge / Askrigg / Hawes) end of July beginning of August. Hoping to pack a slope-soarer / electric glider or two and keen to get some flying as locally as possible whilst not treading on the toes of any local clubs or preferably those of paragliders / gamekeepers / army etc.. Any suggestions please?
SilentPilot
Just had a great session at Baildon today The West slope was as good as I've seen it. Got pretty busy too!!! My initial plan was a trip to Pule Hill but events conspired against me and I ended up calling in at Baildon to assess conditions before a possible move to Haworth. Conditions were indeed superb! I tested the water with my Weasel, but soon ran out of electricity so I needed to swap planes. Returning back to the hill with my Pike, for its Baildon maiden, I bumped into Alex flying his Freestyler. That was going really well Alex, thankfully, launched my Pike for me. I'm capable of launching left handed while on the controls but I wasn't sure if it was trimmed for the conditions so I accepted his kind offer! It was in trim. The roll rate wasn't as impressive as it was at Nont's, probably because I wasn't able to get up as much speed... I just need to make some ballast now!! The rudder doesn't seem too effective in the turns, it will waggle its tail when going straight and level, but doesn't seem to do much in the turn. I may yet move the CG back a bit more. My Sunbird got another outing too (thanks Alex for the tape!), I'm liking this one more each time I fly it. Need to find somewhere in the Fuselage for the ballast tube so I can use my MiniVec slugs. Something for another day... Tony
Phil_G
I must get to Baildon when there's a westerly and a few locals present as I'm not sure exactly where to launch from - the slope seems to get better the lower you walk!
SilentPilot
Baildon has a few different spots to launch from. Westerlys are best with a touch of North, then launch just past the power lines, if you go just far enough round so the lines drop right out of the way it's a pretty decent slope. If there's no North in it, or even a touch of South, then I go right up to the Summit and find an into wind slope. It doesn't always work out though. Sometimes there is too much turbulence from the fwd slopes or caravan park. Lighter models can be flown at the summit in any wind direction if it is not too breezy. My FunGlider and DLGs get thrown off everywhere!!! Baildon isn't perfect but it is very close to home so I've learnt to make the best of it Tony
Phil_G
Thanks Tony, I'll give it a try soon. All being well I'll be popping up to Great Preston this evening, over the ings. A westerly is not ideal, needs a bit more south in it but we'll see.
Phil_G
Finally got to try Baildon in a Westerly yesterday - and its not bad at all! Got there about 10am and was on me tod until early afternoon when I decided to call it a day, just as I was about to leave PSS Mike arrived with his Hawk, then quite a few over the next hour or two including Andy Whitehead who I'd not seen for ages. Later it came around directly onto the slope and conditions were really good, we had a great day, thanks lads! Cheers Phil
pdel
Just back from Baildon . Wind had swung past NW towards N and quite light. I maidened ST Fox body without motor and that was fine. Rain shower and light winds prompted me to retire to car and then return with the powered version Light wind and a need for breakfast brought things to an early close. I was flying with Michael from Otley who had a Max Thrust warmliner like a Multiplex Blizzard.
SilentPilot
I'm itching to get back on a slope! Been too long now... I think the next westerly will see me venture over to Baildon. My Sunbird is still awaiting repair but my Pike is fixed again and my Willow is just about ready to maiden. Tony
