The Skorpion got stung

Hi all

Right, here goes... I will upload photos in sections so here is the fuselage and nose cone first. its damaged on the top, down the one side and on both wing shoulders. You can see from the one photo how bent it is but at least its not broken all the way through. Nose cone is broken down the one side and along the join on the bottom.

Next is the left wing. The thing that worries the most is the proximity to the root. I have no idea how I would rebuild the root up.

Lastly the right wing and this is the worst. Frankly I have no idea how I to do this one. There is a very significant twist in the wing as you can see. Its strange because the trailing edge is more straight.

I have friends who work in a full size glider repair shop. They specialise in glass/carbon structure so I've had help from them in the past...

Way beyond my skills!!!

I could do with those friends right now. I'm sure there will be loads of help and advice on here though, I'm just worried my skill level is not up to this level of damage.

You'll get enough advice on here mate!

If you like I can ask them. It would probably be done free in their spare time, but the offer of some readies might speed them up :D

If they were wiling it would certainly help. I could provide some carbon and resin (its all I have right now) and as many beer tokens as I can afford come payday. Painting wont be needed, I can sort that out or Im sure Les would be willing to give me a hand with that. I dont want to shy away from doing the work, Im more worried about doing a dodgy repair and it failing mid race and putting someone in danger. Thats if I can work out how to do it. Not sure what "readies" are though...

fus and left wing don't look too bad from the photos - however looks like the spar is broken in the right wing?

If you want to learn a lot about doing repairs, then it's doable and a worthwhile project as an exercise - but it's probably more economic to just buy another 2nd hand f3f model.

Readies = cash = beer tokens!!!

I'll to a preliminary enquiry for you. Can't promise anything though, they might be busy...

The good news - everything could be fixed...

The bad news - but is all the time & effort worth it? - might be better to put it on one side (at least for now), and spend the time getting to know the Fosa.

That right wing looks bad - looks to me like the spar is broken top and bottom - which would usually mean its heading for the bin. Spars can be fixed though - by cutting lengthwise slots & laying in lots of carbon tows.

If you really want to have a go - the first thing is to see if you can borrow another Skorpion to make some jigs - for the fus & the right wing.

Phil.

Just muddle through, I've done a few repairs now and everything flies as it should.  Every repair you do makes the next one easier and neater.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I also think the spar must be broken in the right wing. Unfortunately buying another second hand model is just not an option at all. All my spare money (and all my brownie points with the missus) is going on the Fosa.

Tony don't stress mate,if they cant help then I completely understand. I wouldn't expect anyone to help with the repair if it would be putting them out. If someone feels like a project and can help me out then great but I am fully expecting to do the work myself.

I think Im going to have to get some advise on which will be the easiest to start with, Get some ideas on how to do it and go from there. As I do one repair it should help me learn to do the next. The right wing is going to be a big job though. Ive been looking most of the day and found a few different techniques but it would be great if someone could say for the fuzz try this or for the left wing try that and I will need some advice on how to build up the root at the leading edge.

Looks like Im going to have to get used to the Fosa a lot quicker than I was expecting if I want to race at the Mynd next Month....

how to repair a spar - I borrowed the technique from other folks

it will never be as strong as originally - but it will fly - just don't try winch launching it

Phil.

Nice one Phil, I remember seeing that a year or so ago while I was looking at other things and for the life of me I couldn't find it today when I was looking and its exactly one of the links I was hoping to find. I remembered thinking it looks like a very strong join, no winch launching but it will need to stand up to F3F.

Thanks Pete

I think "calm down" is good advice. Taking the pictures was the first time I had looked at it since putting it in the bags on the slope and it looked worse than I remembered which got me a little panicked.

I will definitely take it slow and she is well worth it. I think this is going to be a long project over the next 3 or 4 months if needed. I also think that's another good point, I will choose a section and post a thread with some pictures specific to that repair. Get some advice and work on it. Once done move on to the next. Please continue offering advice on here for each repair, it will help me decide were to start.

Thanks mate, and sorry to make you see your old plane in such a bad way...:(
