Little Eaton
Thank you for the paint info. I will try to get something similar for my Ahi. Clive

SilentPilot
Does nobody here actually wipe down their foam with denatured alcohol before painting? I've no idea exactly what denatured alcohol is but it's supposed to help the paint stick better.

Wiping the model with meths will clean and degrease the surface and therefore isn't a bad idea. Personally, I usually just give foam a light going over with a fine grit sanding sponge or wet and dry before painting. Steve

SilentPilot
I believe multiple light coats thinly misted on are the way to go. Its not usually the paint that attacks the foam, it's the propellant.
isoaritfirst
Just use as little as possible. You will also add a lot of weight if you try to get a strong colour finish.
oipigface
I painted my Alula quite successfully by cleaning the surfaces with Essence F before applying acrylic paint. Masking worked well, too.
Pete Burgess
Where do you get Essence F from?
Little Eaton
Essence F = Carbon Tetrachloride. It was banned a few years ago because of its toxicity. Maybe Meths would be slightly safer.

'It's sold by several craft shops for use by people who interested in dying cloth. I don't think it's the same as carbon tetrachloride. It certainly doesn't smell the same as dry cleaning shops used to. Anyway, I forget which website I got mine from, but it is advertised at: http://www.georgeweil.com/ProductDetail.aspx?Menu=1&Level1=85&Level2=1221&PID=1533 and https://t.greatart.co.uk/h-dupont-essence-f-thinner.html i first came across it because Alexis Maréchal recommends it as a cleaner in the instructions for his Voltij model. It's one of a range of degreasers/solvents that I keep to hand. I've not heard of any toxicity problems before.
Reggie Perrin
Gentlemen, I always clean the surfaces of foam with a very mild solvent available from Halfords, it's called 'Surface Cleaner' and is a very mild panel wipe. It's an aerosol and is indispensable in my workshop or garage. For sticking anything using double sided tape a quick wipe with Surface Cleaner will make it permanent. It's basically a degreaser that isn't too harsh. I've used it on lots of EPP, EPO and other foam airframes successfully but please TEST it first...! For avoiding melting the foam, a very light quick dust coat will give a base that doesn't attach the foam, hold the can further away than recommended and build up slowly... Halfords aerosol acrylics are also very good and in a range of colours.... Just 2p
