Vampire NG (next generation)

Recommended Posts

I have always been an admirer of the Vampire F3B since it first hit the scene back in 2010, but never had the pleasure of owning one. Then last year while surfing the net, I read that an “NG” variant had been released with the objective being a more defined slope discipline design. Temptation got the better of me and I placed my order just before Xmas. Quoted order to delivery was  4 – 6 weeks, and taking a week out for the festive break it arrived on time.

I opted for an empty airframe, protective wing / tailplane covers and brass ballast set (1.5kg total in wing). The standard F3F/DS layup is double carbon 2 x 160g. Wing servo wiring harness is pre-installed with MPX connector “plug in” system at wing/fus joint.  With shipping into the UK it came in at 1325 euro, which appears to me to be very competitive at the moment.

All looks very nicely made and I am looking forward to the install (…..before any of my Midland buddies take the p!$$ on my build time history, I promise to have it in the air this year!). Install will be KST DS225MG in the wing driving the latest servorahmen  IDS kits, and KST DS215MG in the fus.

I’m hoping that the flying characteristics will make it an interesting F3F pairing with my PB1

A few pics to go with..........

I will be honest and say I've never been a fan of yellow on a glider but those colours go together perfectly. You won't have any issues of contrast against the sky.

Looks really nice mate, congrats.

Yellow just works really well.

great looking model Paul and a steal of a price.

How much smaller is it compared to the normal vampire.

What are the 4 x Rod eyes for?

Threaded ball ends for elevators?

I might be tempted to fit apiece of rod bent to fit along the elevator hinge line. Then solder the ball on that.

(Is it built yet?)

Have you started yet then Paul :poke: lol

A build thread would help keep you motivated during the build, solve any problems you may encounter, & help others too .

I have now passed my own Vampire on to Samuel, but I will still fly it when he's not looking lol

Mine is ex Adam's & then Andy b, so my passing it onto Sam means that its now on its 4th owner, testimony indeed to its build quality. It has been & remains an excellent model. I guess its seen 8 yrs of service now.

Tail halves come with bent wires/balls already fitted during manufacture, although at the moment I think my balls are a bit too close together

Linkage on the tail end of the carbon rods are supplied glued in place, and the other pair of ball links must be for the servo ends once cut to length.

I will see where rod heights line up with servos before choosing ball link or conventional M2 clevis.

Yes you are correct Tom that the 4 x threaded rod eyes are intended for the wing control surfaces. The model comes supplied with pre-drilled hole in a location built up with resin.

If I go ahead with the IDS kit I bought seperate to the model, then I will have to dremel out the resin area.

Alternative could be to cut a slot in the end of the IDS drive rod which is wide enough to take the eye of the threaded rod fitting.

My temptation at the moment is to dremel out the resin and go for fitting the full IDS kit.

Ah, but mine has got a "go faster" stripe down the fuselage boom which is going to make all the difference
