Bad Weather Contingency Plans

Back up plan is now my main plan.

Lots of time spent in Newquay surfing and some free ride mountain biking.

Planes are now gathering dust again in the corner.

Surfing in Newquay and mountain free biking sounds fab Mark! Got to be good for body and mind :)

I used to be into skateboarding/windsurfing many moons ago. Never tried surfing but it looks great and apparently Newquay is our Hawaii when it comes to wave ridding right?

Alright calm down.....🤣

Newquay is a awesome place, although I don’t think we quite get the same weather. As I get older I don’t think throwing myself down big hills on my bike is that good for my body. I still try to skateboard a little, longboard. Can you see the theme developing here? Something like never growing up? 😁

I prefer to stay on top of the hill and throw my plane down it :D

Though it's true to say I often have to go down and get it again. It's great exercise!

I just downloaded PicaSim and the software to allow Tx usage.

Only had a quick go on it with my old DX8 but it seems great :)

This mission looks fun :)

"Achtung Spitfire! is a 20-mission single-player scripted campaign featuring a fictional storyline line starring a young Russian pilot from Siberia serving on the North Caucasus Front in late May 1943. It features missions inspired by the Soviet 37th and 56th Armies attack on the German 44th Armored Corp west of the city of Krymskaya. Your squadron will be flying the famous British-built Spitfire Mk.Vb which was loaned to the Red Air Force via the Lend Lease program. Meeting Spitfires in the skies of the Kuban region came as quite a surprise to the Luftwaffe! You are assigned to the 57th GIAP, which was part of the 216th Mixed Aviation Division of the 4th Air Army, an elite Guards unit. Your squadron is deployed to Slavyanskaya airfield, near the town of same name. Experience fierce aerial combat in the skies above the picturesque Kuban region. Defend coastal ports on dawn patrols, escort friendly bombers over enemy territory and help suppress AAA batteries, but always be on the lookout for enemy fighters! Time frame: May 25th, 1943 - June 1st, 1943 Regiment: 57th GIAP Available Aircraft: Spitfire Mk.Vb Duration: 20 missions Mission Duration: 15 to 50 minutes Average total playtime: Approx. 12 hours Author: =The Syndicate= This campaign requires IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Kuban and collector plane Spitfire Mk.V"

My only advice is NOT to get into combat or glider flight sims...The learning curves a huge and long and can lead to total breakdowns of family and friends :D

A funny/true story: When I was a flying officer in the 609 Squadron (online) I was involved in a massive 24 hour Battle of Britain scenario which meant I had to blowout a first date with a lovely lady.... I was upfront with her, apologising and explaining that it was my duty for Queen and country etc... 😃

Once I recovered from my  battle wounds we did meet up and ended up getting married...But alas I think the stresses of war over the years got the better of us...I am now single :D

I'll post some pics of my HOTAS (hand on throttle and stick) when I get a chance to give an idea of the hardware required.

I would recommend the Condor Version 2 glider sim to start with as it will teach basics of flying and does not require a monster PC/top end graphics card to run it.

  Tally Ho!

Not my HOTAS Cougar but same (with hall sensor mod). This stick and throttle is a replica of the F16  Flying Falcon jet:

Hall sensor mod on throttle:

Rudder pedals (Not mine. Will need to replace these at some point as they are getting a little old in the tooth):

I also use an oldie but goldie, Microsoft Sidewinder Force feed back stick which is a lot simpler (perfect for gliders etc) and has a built in rudder control by twisting the stick (saves on desktop space/rudder pedals under desk and wires):

That is some great gear, Marc :)

Not really for me though, I downloaded PicaSim and I'm loving the F3K challenges, getting pretty good too!
Just using my DXe at the moment. Don't want to risk my DX9 or 18 when I don't have to.

It's a nice little sim and if it can help me pickup thermals and scratch away then I'll donate even more to the guy :D

I understand about flight sims SP :)

That Picasim  looks very interesting/specific to what you are into 👍

But I would urge anyone who is into RC gliders to try out the Condor flight sim as it puts you in the virtual seat and gives another perspective of our flying/soaring passion (from a "real" glider's pilots point of view).

It is also quite nice to soar around the Alps (or wherever/thousands of free/user made maps to download) scratching for lift/slope soaring etc and completing various distance tasks on your own or against pilots online in real time.

Some people even use VR goggles to give a sense/feel of actually being there.

I use a head tracking unit so that when I turn my head it turns the view on the monitor.

And Like I said this sim does not require a mainframe PC to run well :)

Either way, we are spoilt for choice SP!...Happy days m8 :)

 Cheers

What's the risk SP?  Software instability/corruption or something?

I had an issue where my DX9 got damaged due to static discharge when I plugged it into a simulator using the trainer cord.

Horizon fixed it for me foc and assured me it wouldn’t happen again, but you know, one bitten twice shy...
