    Taranis/OpenTX - Logging Telemetry Data

Cheers. Yes, reckoned the new symbol at top-right of screen meant logging, and I set it to "ON" all the time... as putting it on a switch is just one more thing to forget to turn on! Useful tip to know I can select just the timeframe for the flight to be graphed, thanks. Jon PS: 18mths into using the Taranis (with a big gap in the middle when I did no RC activity at all) I'm becoming much more fluent with OpenTX. Initially programmed my own models from the manual, but since learnt lots from studying the Frickman and Shellim templates. The trick for me seems to be to keep things as simple and elegant as possible, while getting just the right amount of functionality I need.

Lovely looking plane by the way. Hope it goes as well as it looks.

    DLG tail configuration question

Putting all theories aside, I have tried both bottom and top mounted tail on the same model type, and honestly could not detect any performance change in launch or flight. I now stick with tail on the top just because I think it looks better and is possibly a little less susceptible to damage on a missed catch.

    Taranis/OpenTX - Logging Telemetry Data

Yes nice one Jon - looks like you have got it. Just be careful to ensure you are actually logging to SD. Some of the TX programs like Jaspers have a switch for toggling the SD logging. You know its logging when you see this icon. I have a special function set to "ON" which forces SD logging on all the time. When you view the log in Companion you will see the entire session. You just need to select the rows in the table below (SHIFT + CURSOR KEYS) to select the portion you want. You can also export as a CSV file and do something funky with your own charting using EXCEL. I kinda wish the graphing support was better in companion for viewing and manipulating these charts - it's very basic.

On the SF2 there is a kevlar window for approx 2 inches behind the wing so all good on having the aerials inside. I know when Jos flys he is fairly frequently getting RSSID low but that doesn't appear to worry him. Worth having a good range test (without the motor battery connected!) to see what signal strength is like in different orientations. Re Events - Everyone is always welcome to come along and have a go. No pressure to enter the event so essentially it is just practice. We all started somewhere Most with knees knocking and hands shaking as the plane didn't want to go in a straight line from A to B . But after a few flights things started to make more sense. Forgot to say when Steve B and I went over to our first Eurotour ummm about 12 ish years ago we were shaking like leaves during the flight!

I'm sure you know this but if the fuse is all carbon you definitely want the aerials outside. I don't know if there is a non carbon area on the fuse of that model.

I think I've now sorted it. RX and Vario removed from wrecked X-RES fuselage and hand-held for the test at various heights in the room from floor to ceiling. To set it all up in the radio: First in the Telemetry menu, need to 'discover' sensors, Then in the Special Functions menu, need to 'enable' logging. Then in Companion, it looks like one doesn't need to actually upload the log file, one can just 'view' it. Yay!

I think I'm ready for 8s, guess I won't know if I'm not until I try it... Yeah I'm pleased that using a longer ramp for launch has worked, I maidened an X Plus before the SF2, that's running a 1509 1.5D setup I bought off here, maidened using a 3s to trim it out etc and then went 4s next flight. Launch was still easy and I'd be stressing about that one being flown more than the SF2. I killed the 4s though, lol, 2200mah doesn't last long with that motor on 4s, bigger battery next time

Fair point about stopping it spinning around, good enough reason to put it back on I guess. Haha, yeah I figured this was coming. I certainly need more time with it 1st, do you need an A or B license to compete? I could 'possibly' make Wetlands as I mentioned when we met, I'd prefer a training day rather than being thrown in at the deep end tbh.

Haven't used the TX much, that was only the 3rd flight, but I got no warnings on my 2nd flight which was a different plane (which was also a maiden..) but had the tips outside the fuse due to it being carbon. Well at least I know it can happen and not be a problem so I'm a little more relaxed about trying again with them inside.

    Taranis/OpenTX - Logging Telemetry Data

Been using RX4R plus FrSky vario in 2mRES, and now have a G-RX6 with integral vario to go into DLG. In the case of the 2mRES, already got telemetry set up and working on TX to display Alt+, Alt and Vspd. So, from what you're saying, it sounds actually very straightforward to first enable logging then just upload each flight's log onto Companion, etc. Will fiddle with the TX to enable logging, then test in the garden (star-jumps with the RX and battery in one hand should work adequately!) then download. Thanks for the help. Jon

    Lundy Fest 2021!

Thanks to all for sending me their deposits for the barn. This is very much appreciated and, rest assured will be refunded 'if'.' in a year and and three months time... its.. 'not' an option .. then you will all be refunded. Lets stay positive however! A lot can change in one year and 3 months time .. so, I'm very much looking forward to seeing you all in Sept 2021! I have just noticed that there must be many folks looking ahead! The Camping option is now closed. So, its not just me looking forward into the future! There are 5 properties however, still open to book. The Quarters property is still available and has always been a particular favourite place of mine to stay on Lundy. It was the first' property I stayed in. It's close to the pub, has fantastic views of the Island and a little garden for setting up your models! So, if a few of you want to go 'as a group' ( there is one double bed.. and 3 options for the single ) its a fab place for 5. Joe has built a new 'Indoor free flight model'. It was tested this week in my local church hall. It maiden flight was fab... apart from the fact the model landed on a beam during its maiden flight lol! So .... you will be pleased to hear...it was dislodged the next night,, by a very long pole lol!. It looks like it will be a contender for the indoor barn comp! LundyLynda

I Used to get odd warning flying f3b with the aerials inside the fuse. With the plane at distance and certain angles. I never had any loss of contact but you are right to be cautious. Not sure what advice to give - check your logs and see if it's generally low or quick drops. Nice plane. Enjoy.

Glad to hear it went well. Yeah the landing spike is a must really. It also stops the plane skidding round and damaging the prop etc when the grass is short and wet. Get a few more flights under your belt and we need to twist your arm to attend a training or comp day

This is great to hear, well done! The good thing is you can add cells later and there is plenty of room for them in the fuz. It is great that you could launch on your own, very handy.

I finally flew the SF2 I bought off Alan Flockhart, 4031 2050kv : 6.7GB/ 6s/ 19x 22 and it was great! I set up a long 1.8s ramp for launch mode as social distancing meant no one available to help with that 1st launch, and it worked perfectly. Once in the air I switched to a shorter ramp of 0.8s which also seemed to work great. Even on 6s you could see the SF2 pick up speed towards the end of the throttle ramp, something my X Plane doesn't really do, or at least isn't as noticeable. Had a blast carving the sky up with it and can't wait to get more flights in. Maybe a slight mistake on my part though, I removed the landing peg that was installed, and with all the decent weather we've had the runway was a scorched strip, so despite it slowing to a decent landing speed the thing slid forever I'd planned to have a 2nd flight on 8s, but I got a single RSSI warning in flight (FRSky) so decided to check install and do another range check at home rather than tempt fate. As a precaution I've swapped the rx and range checked this afternoon and it looks ok, although it looked ok on the other rx so I'll have to see. Antenna's are inside fuse, both are well clear of the carbon front and back, I know most keep the antenna's internal but I usually run the tips outside so I'm a bit wary about them inside. If I get another low RSSI warning inflight I'll probably drill 2 small holes and put the tips outside for piece of mind. I guess it's possible from a certain angle that both antenna's get blocked for a fraction of a second so has anyone else experienced a low RSSI signal that doesn't/ didn't seem to cause any further problems with internal antenna's?

    DLG tail configuration question

And just for the full answer, whether it really is another reason would take an aerodynamicist . theory states the at high aoa the wing is kicking up a lot of turbulence which can affect elevator performance. Mounting under the boom puts it out of the wake of the wing. at least that’s my understanding of it. dave

    Taranis/OpenTX - Logging Telemetry Data

Jon how far have you got? What RX are you using? RX (telemetry enabled) needs to be configured on the TX. You can then enable logging for the telemetry which is written to SD card Then load Companion, Load Log (Select recorded trace from SD card). Select the Altitude log to show graph. I use windows snipping tool to take screen shot for exporting screen shot. let me know how far you have got and I can talk you through in more detail. cheers

Wonder if anyone can help, or point me towards a clear online resource. I want to be able to: Log altitude data on my X9D+ Then download this (via Companion I assume?) into an exportable graphic form, a bit like the piccie below. Jon

    F3K and Mozzy 14-day challenges 2020

Very nice David. I thought about taking my now battered and increasingly heavy GoMini out this morning, but felt disheartened by the extra challenge this presents to an already small DLG, so will wait till my Auri is finished over the next few days... useful thing the forthcoming bout of wet and windy weather! PS - I was going to ask how you here how you've set things up to log altitude data, but I've created a separate thread for this:

    F3K and Mozzy 14-day challenges 2020

Pleasant morning at the field. Flew my lighter NXT as still playing with the trim Had to work hard to get away properly due to turbulence and narrow lift, but once over 150 meters, it was pretty straightforward. Push up wind, find lift, follow back downwind, repeat. Had to come down at 34 minutes as low battery alarm was sounding. Got to see Mike F's maiden of his new/old Snipe and also flying his F5J model - very nice indeed. Resolved the issue of my G-RX6 wacko telemetry. Seems when I de-cased it, I didn't replace the foam over the pressure sensor. Either that or there wasn't any to start with. Anyway works fine now with some foam.
