  1. YeeHaa!! Wild and Windy on Levisham for sure. Not known it so livelly, a case of hold on tight and hope for the best. Some terrific flights from Pengy who also had FTD of 33.25 Results after 13 Rounds :- Different slope tomorrow thankfully. Meet in the main car park at 9pm Jon

  2. Realised this should really have been in the Flyers Workshop Forum rather than get lost amongst older threads. "5 hours ago, andyharrold said: One has been rumoured for quite a while. Colin, Graham and Kevin are adamant that I need training! I will discuss it with them over a few beers next month in Bulgaria. I will keep you posted" We've had many requests both post and pre Covid to ask if we will be running any more of these "Come & Try it/Coaching Days". Everyone that attended the previous sessions's said they enjoyed the day and learnt a lot whether it be to do with model set up, air reading or flying etc. The good news is that this year we intend to run some more sessions at the Tonbridge field. All levels of flying ability will be welcome and catered for with the aim being to have an enjoyable and relaxing days flying without the stress of competition. They will normally be held on Saturdays and are subject to a weather go/no go call the day before. All we ask of attendees is that they make a £10 donation to the Tonbridge Club for the days tuition. We are hoping to hold at least one session before the start of the flying season followed up with more over the year. Each session will be limited to 8 visiting pilots with three coaches on hand to ensure eveyone gets a lot of one on one help. If you are interested in attending one of these sessions, please reply to this thread. Anyone who doesn’t make it onto the list this time will be first on the list for the next session. If oversubscribed preference will be given to newcomers. Action Required: Those that have already expressed an interest in coming can you please confirm on your original reply to this thread whether you will be attending on Saturday 13th April. 3. Yep super weekend. Could have been a tad warmer, but otherwise great. Fantastic to see Paul smashing it again. Great flying with the Old Proton doing it's stuff, but equally good with the few rounds he flew with the Needle. Tricky conditions, 20 rounds of course helped to give a fair result. Mark and Will both flying super smooth, (most of the time). My first comp after the op, so I'm very happy to have come off the hill feeling fit and well. Thanks to everyone for making the comp a success. Hard work at times.

  4. Talk about the Wild West, We had it in spades this weekend. First Levisham and today on the NW Ridge The Wind carried on from where it left off yesterday, strong variable and bumpy. To add to the pilots work load, the walk to the landing area was through knee high heather which just added to the physical exhaustion of flying in those conditions. In order to put an end on proceedings, it was agreed to make 20 rounds the limit for the comp. Thus at the end, with some truly inspiring flying, in first place and CoC Champion 2024 was Paul Garnett, closing in on second place was Mark Redsell, and with a terrific third place was William Fourie, moving up from 5th place the day before. Fastest time of the weekend was retained by Paul with a 33.25 Great comp, and I did promise some great weather, maybe a little less great next time. Look forward the summer league, and see all you guys soon Jon

  7. OK guys, to put my commitment where my mouth is. As a 1 time only offer, if a group of pilots want to order 3-4 Wyvern models, with the aim of racing (I hope) they can be discounted to £600 each. Check out willow racing for details. That's pretty much what I paid for my first Pike WR 24 years ago. Ian

  8. Great to finally get out flying again after such a long time. This sessions winter league hasn't been good to us with all the comps in the Midlands and Wales being canceled. Day one for me was a day of two half, morning being not the best but lady look gave me a bit better conditions in the afternoon on Levisham. Then today just did two rounds that felt like I was flying with full crow deployed with a large lady sat on top of my glider. But that's the look sometimes. Brilliant to catch back up with everyone again and hopefully the summer comps bring a few more of you out back play. Some excellent flying though out the two days by the top three, well done guys. It was great to see Bruce fly that 36 on Levisham, bang on every base and never faltered . If anyone who reads these F3F comments and thinks they would like to come along and have ago we'd all be more than happy to give you all the support and help we can. You do not need the latest models that are on sales to be competitive. At the moment Ian Masson is doing a great deal for his new designed glider the Wyvern which was going very well at times this weekend. Big thanks to Jon and Mark for running this years Champion of Champions. See you all in Wales in a couple of weeks.

  10. Phew, what a few days that was! Thanks for the kind words guys, appreciated, had a cracking first day on Levisham, I did have a good share of the air, I did push my luck as well!! It all nearly came to an end when I launched and transmitter battery alarm sounded, may have been able to get a flight in, but decided best to abort, safety is paramount, especially when the wind is blowing hard and blustery, figuring my cop was over!! BIG thanks to Mark Treble who had a battery to would fit, only lost the one round, could have done without that hiccup though!! Day 2 was looking great, different hill, very challenging sometimes, it didn’t disappoint, wind blowing up to 20m/s, but no lift.. but the odd bit coming through, you had to be tidy, I almost lost it on B when it semi flicked, I was hardly touching it your honour, maybe a bit close to the edge! Only 2 cuts which cost me dear today, wouldn’t be me if I didn’t eh? Mark Redsell was chasing me with some super smooth flying but I just managed to stay ahead . managed FTD as well with a 33.25. So big thanks to everyone who made it a great comp, good to see some old friends from ‘the south’ and the guys a bit further north, hope your drive home was uneventful. See you all again PG

  11. A good day today 15-21ms at the start but Levisham is still cruel even when it's windy! The wind died down a bit after 3pm. We managed 13 rounds with a short break after every 5 as it was pretty hectic. Pengy was going very well, flying directly behind me, no doubt after using all his working time to let my sh*te air go through. All to play for tomorrow though with another very windy start forecast. Its been a good while since we have had a proper windy comp, not saying its a classic (on Levisham) but has good potential for tomorrow.

  15. F5RES | Medina | 1 pm | 59 mins 43 seconds Was working last weekend, nice to get out today in the sun with no flight restrictions. Clouded over and went cold after 2pm, but had 90 minutes of glorious sun. Got away properly on 2nd flight. Great seeing as was surprised to top out at 560 meters. One good save at 10 meters at half way point. Apart from a sore back and muddy field it was a pleasant fly.

  16. Kavan Resco : F5L : 03/03/2024 : 1m 32s This is just me joining in and getting setup for future flights. Let me know if there is anything I've done wrong. My Resco I purchased over a year ago with the intention of getting involved for 2023, but too many things got in my way and here we are March 2024 already! So I've had the Resco ready for a few weeks now, but it's either been wet and/or very windy. Finally today was calm, but by the time I got out, guess what? It started raining with wind. Anyway, I carried on with some launches. Not ideal conditions to trim the Resco, but at least I could see it climbed nicely with the power setup I've used. So it was reaching 60m between 15 to 17 secs. Happy with that. It's tending to bank left, so will check the wing balance. The AUW is 490g, with CG at 79mm. This is more towards the forward end of the recommended range (78-82mm), and did behave as if it was a little tail heavy, but I really need to try in better conditions as the wind did pick up with the rain. This flight was actully raining. Looking forward to see what I can achieve with the Resco during 2024, and am currently building a Magic 2 SL for hi-starts. Carl

  17. Good to see everyone made it home safely. I think there were some early to bed households after that! That was some weekend, need to have a few weeks off now, not to mention a bit of model repairs! However, apologies for the results error, no excuses but I'm going to give one anyway Issues with the Data file meant I had to create the leader board separately. All sorted now, so attached is a cutdown spreadsheet which hopefully everyone can open Jon Champions2024 No Macros.xls

  18. Yep....Mr G 100% committed on the bases and very impressive pumps! Excellent flying both days too. Really good to see Williams efforts paying off too.... Really difficult conditions both days, as lumpy as it gets, with big thermals too. Only 2 events (?) run across all locations this winter so good to get a couple of days out though.

  20. Well Levisham shud upto it's usual with a mixed bag of results for me and many other today. Great to see Paul Garnnet put us all to shame with some amazing flying to top day ones leader board. Flying was quite tricky with blustery conditions a lot of the time. 13 rounds in made it a very busy day between Flying buzzing and a bit of chucking off. It's been the first time in years I've come off the slope feeling wiped out Couple of beers followed by the fish and then a couple more beers,in bed at 8:30 and hopefully another good day tomorrow. Bring it on

  22. Built a Caprice (Conquest sister ship?) a few years ago, amazing test glide.... but the design seems to be a thermal magnet! First tow it went out of sight to never be seen again going up at a rate of knots under a big cloud in an awestruck/annoying manner. Fit a Dethermaliser or have another think about some micro RC gear for rudder maybe? Not that a DT made any difference to mine!

  23. Well a huge thanks to so many pilots choosing Kingmax servos over the Dec/Jan/Feb period it unexpectedly took them out of stock recently before we could get more in. Chinese new year hasn't helped and only delayed things further sorry. But now we have an awful lot more of the really popular ones coming back into stock again soon! So the website stock status now shows back order rather than out of stock so you can pre-order yours for dispatch as soon as they are in. The really popular ones are the 10mm CLS0612W and CLS0911W for F3F/F5j type models and the C507 for F5j (tail and ailerons) and smaller slopers. Also check out the amazing CLS1510W (these are in stock already) - which is gaining popularity in larger gliders and scale gliders with the same footprint as the 0911W (KST X10 size) but 12mm for an amazing torque of 15kg at 0.10s speed. 24. Hi Mike, yes a full KST servo install, and very pleased with it. Everything is super accurate, making programming a very simple procedure that took me about 10 minutes. I'm using two packs of 18650cells and a practical RC red Pico magnetic switch to work as the battery backer. I ordered the model late August as a focus for me during my hospital stay and recuperation. February delivery, so around 6months, which turned out to be ideal. Just ready for Spring. Should it ever stop raining....

  25. For everyone entering the competition this weekend, we need to know when you are arriving so we can arrange access to the site. The main caming field is closed due to the condition of the soft ground, camping will be on the hard standing and if you are under canvas, then the small field behind the hanger is in use, but no vehicles are allowed on the grass. If you are arriving before Saturday morning then please reach out to Manny Williamson to arrange access as soon as possible please. Manny Williamson on manny@bmfa.org or 0116 2441091

  28. What a weekend, 20 rounds in 2 full on days was great opportunity to get some practice in with my Wyvern but I’m definitely a slow learner! Huge thanks to Mark and John for organising the days and simply keeping going to the end. I don’t think that anyone could argue with the results (I will send you the pictures William). Some excellent flying and even better banter but quite what Andy got up to I’m not sure It definitely felt like the winter league had ended as we finished the day with an ice cream Looking forward to the next comp I can get to. 30. Purito : F3L : 24th March 2024 : 1132s 18m52s Harden moor - Time 16:15 - wind speed around 8mph and gusty, Westerly, EDIT. Purito 417g plus 150g ballast (made me able to penetrate just a little). The short flight at the beginning is me seeing circling birds in the distance heading towards me after take off so I landed PDQ and re-launched fairly near them. Close enough to pick up what they were flying in. The blip at 700s is me circling and losing what the Purito was doing. It looked okay then it didn't! The Purito was getting too high for me. Because the model was down wind I was not getting the air through my goggles, they started to mist a little. Not good so I started to bring her down. Ever weary of opening spoilers after learning from my PuRES and seeing it nose dive, I played around with the spoilers. It was the first time in anger of using the spoilers on the Purito. The spoiler to elevator mix looked okay. 1100s to 1300s was spoilers fully open. It descended very gracefully at -1.42 m/s against the head wind. Earlier in the afternoon (13:30ish, 4th flight) I picked up a thermal. Flight length 7 mins ish. But due to the wind speed, 10mph and gusty, it wasn't long before I was too far down wind without the height achieved so that was brought to a premature end. Out of all the flights I had this is typical of them all, Flight 33. The ping off the bungee was typically 13m helped by the wind speed. It fair stretched the bungee and line. I didn't quite know what to expect with the bungee with the added ballast. It seemed to take it well. I have no fear doing it again. I added 150g at the start reducing this to 50g for the last few flights of the day around 16:45 as the wind had eased a little. I have 200g of ballast but will save that for competition if having to fly in the upper limits of what is allowed (18mph). The added ballast did make a difference with regards penetrating the wind. But with the wind being gusty and air that is not buoyant ie in shadow, a noticeable drop in temperature, with the gusts getting up and potential sinky air, the ballast inevitably brought the model down quicker. But would it have been down quicker with no ballast and pointing the nose down to stop being blown down wind? Should have tested that to prove the theory. Next time. Richard

  35. My REPUS is almost ready. Only hitch is I ran out of blue Oralight, so covering the ailerons is delayed. I've enjoyed the build. Only minor change I made was to add fairing made of scrap balsa to the rear of the fuselage to make a smooth transition to the boom. I'm powering it off a 2s 350mAh LiPo which fits nicely into the battery bay. I used GDW 1906A servos on the ailerons and for the flaps HV Bluebirds. It's looking like with nose weight to balance on the suggested point it will come in at 410g which I'm very happy with. It will be interesting to see how it goes compared to a conventional tailed RES glider

  36. My personal problem is advancing age, and more specifically, knees. I’ve signed up for the North of England Eurotour to see how the knees manage on the Hole of Horcum, which is generally less physically demanding than the Bwlch. I also have plans to return to my favourite slope overlooking Nant-y-Moel when the weather is suitable, which is relatively easy to get to, and much easier for landings than the other Bwlch slopes. If all that goes well, I may well enter the Welsh Open at a later date. More generally, Mike’s comments are well-taken but omit what I think of as the main driver: the F3F format is struggling in Britain and elsewhere because of the development of other formats that have proven more attractive to people entering model aerosports. I refer particularly to drone-racing which is cheaper; can be held indoors; probably just as interesting for the technically-minded; and has a similar appeal to some video games, which can develop some necessary skills from a very early age. F3F also requires quite a large minimum attendance. Another format that has done well recently that is more directly in competition with F3F is the various classes of triangle racing. In some cases these have been deliberately introduced by some model manufacturers to keep the costs of models down, and the original idea of a competition for large scale gliders has morphed into something almost affordable. (I’ve noticed interest in the planes (if not the competitions) among some stalwarts of the F3F scene in Britain recently.) F3K also seems to be thriving. It has in common with both drone-racing and triangle racing that there have been clearly targeted training campaigns to give new entrants more of an idea of what is involved and how to improve performance. There is nothing like that in British F3F. Enough said. I think it is a pity, but c’est la vie.

  42. cREst / F5L / 19/3/24 / 7:30 There was a strong SE breeze all day and it started to slacken off at 4:30. I put my 500g version on charge just before 5:00 and at quarter past the wind had really dropped, so I then had to charge the lightest. Didn't fully charge and went out at 5:30. I was in the air by about 5:40. Really smooth air and on launch I just followed some homeward bound Gulls. I may have been in a little lift when the motor cut, but it could have been excess speed from dropping the nose. It seemed to bounce a little, so I circled. At 250m away I actually thought I was wasting my time and so headed back. I stood there not moving the sticks most of the time. A first in a very long time. It remained very flyable until about 6:20. I was quite shocked when I looked at the chart. I just love how this AMRT cuts the motor early (56m) – bonus. I posted this at 18:15, must have not pressed Submit Reply....... It was still here ??

  43. Medina : F5L : 18-03-24 : 3:01 Another very short up and down flight today in Ashton Court, Bristol, with patchy lift and rather windy. Just to get something chalked up on the board. I had to install 60g ballast to calm it down and have any pentration at all. Being new to RES, I thought I'd share a lesson learned for others also new to the class. I had a very scary flight later on at about 5:30pm. There were still strong thermals but it was blustery, so they were broken up and hard to use. But finally caught one that took me up to about 100m. But the wind got up or maybe just got stronger up there and it suddenly got blown downwind fast! Quite scary. I was losing sight of it, so had to run about 400m downwind.... fast! I nearly lost it in some big trees as it was getting too far away to see orientation properly, or see it at all. You can see fromt the chart the crazy up and down when i switched on the motor, initially too fast and it was all over the place. Then I dropped throttle to c.60% & finally managed to get see it properly, calm down a bit & wrestle it under control and powered back towards me and landed safely. My heart was in my mouth.... Coming from modern DLGs which can punch into the wind well, I didn’t realise how badly affected by wind these RES models are, even with 60g ballast in, but should have had 100 or more. Thank god it had a motor otherwise it would be at the top of a tree now! Lesson learned is don't get too far downwind, especially if you don't have a motor! Or Maybe just dont fly if its too windy for your experience level and build up slowly. PS thinking about it again, I feel a bit daft not just turning motor on earlier. But coming from DLG and never having flown with a motor before, I kinda forgot until it was rather late… Thankfully all ended well. Eek! some Cheers Will

  44. All, it is with much regret that we have to cancel the first competition of the season. The entrance to the field is severely waterlogged, and reports from the farmer is that he even struggles to get through, as such there are now deep ruts around the entrance, this means accessing the field is a no go. With the lanes being narrow, there is no safe place to park vehicles on the road for the number of competitors that are attending, this together with a consistent forecast for rain and wind on Saturday, means that we have no alternative but to make an early call and cancel this event. See you all Good Friday!

  45. Ian, that's a great initiative! Just a suggestion - how about giving preference to pilots entering a comp with an older model - just so they can get a whiff of F3F proper (i.e. get hooked!).

  46. Thanks for the Saker acknowledgement Mike, part of the objectives of the Saker was to keep 3m moldies affordable. As someone who has more demands on my weekend time than most I love going to F3F races to compete and to have fun more than I ever think I can win. For me the most important part of a race weekend is that it’s a weekend and fun with some mates. The models I fly (yep I know I’m biassed) are equally as good to sport fly in just about all conditions that slope dog and I are willing to go out in. There is no ‘minimum entry level’ for models to race. I’ve seen any number of models on the slope that would be more than capable of an F3F race. I love that there was a typhoon racing the Northern winter leagues this year. There’s a huge amount of fun in all the classes of modelling, I’m too ignorant of electric motors and GPS to start changing classes now. I think that the simplicity of concept that F3F has- fly between 2 posts 10 times, has a purity of attraction. The Welsh open can be thought of as a big scary race but I think its one of the more fun weekends- you’ll probably see more posts about curry/dinner locations than turn techniques. There are definitely more legends of Mark and Scot’s and drinking than flying! Don’t worry about the model you have, just come and give it a go.

  48. HERE WE GO! The F3K 2024 season is soon to commence, in some ways it doesn't seem like 5 minutes since the last competition at the end of the 2023 season, however, in other ways, it seems like an eternity. Please be reminded that there are a number of changes in the rules for 2024 and some existing rules which we will be enforcing. Registration for the event will close midnight the Thursday preceding the event, in this case Thursday 14th March. The call for 'Go/No Go' will be announced as usual the Friday preceding the event by 6.00pm latest. The competition entry fee has increased from £10 to £15 per day, so this event will be £15. The minimum number of entries to make it a valid competition will be 6. The minimum number of completed rounds to make a valid competition is 4. The number of completed rounds before a dropped score has been reduced from 12 to 6. There has been an increase to the number of events which count to your overall score, if 6 rounds are completed, the best 5 to count. Hope to see as many of you there as possible.
