  1. RESULTS Results below. Pics to follow. COMP REPORT One word describes this comp….Challenging! The usual Tonbridge comp team arrived early at Leigh Park Farm’s acres of freshly mown grass to set the field up. Fortunately no cow patties were to be seen anywhere but the ground was rock hard. It was of course raining when we arrived but the weather forecast was for it to stop fairly quickly and it did. The wind however was forecast to start off at around 11mph but to continue to rise throughout the day which turned out to be the case. After a lot of late pull-outs we ended up with
  2. ENTRY CLOSED WITH 20 FLYERS Hot off the press Gentlemen, Our hosts NKN have a large gas BBQ and a 2 ring gas cooker with kettle for making a brew if any one wants to use themselves and bring there own they are welcome, or if enough interest they could take orders in the morning and pop along the local Asda and get what flyers want and then cook it for them! Please let me know of your interest in this? ALSO the adjacent Gun Club serves food including full English breakfast and has toilet facilities. Drive slowly to avoid POTHOLES on Joyce Green Lane The event

  5. 1st round in this year’s Southern Area BMFA F5J League Venue is Little Bentley Polo Club, Rectory Road, Essex, CO7 8SN. Your model must have an approved height limiting/data logging device (AMRT) which must be able to show the max height your model goes to during its motor run time plus 10 seconds after your motor is shut off. The limiting function must be set to allow maximum 30seconds motor run time, and the height limiting function must either be disabled or set to 300m. Motor restart is permitted at any time during flight for safety reasons, but will result in a zero score
  6. In case others haven't seen Pete M's post below there will be a pre-season event at Little Bentley to prepare ourselves for the 2018 league onslaught :-) If enough pilots register we'll run slots and rounds otherwise we'll do the IRCMC all-up-last-down timed flight, landing target is near yourself, and no timer/helper. Register your interest and watch this space for a go, no-go on Saturday 24th March. If Sunday 25th March isn't good for flying will we roll forward to Sunday 1st April (go, no-go 31st March). If 1st April isn't good we'll roll forward to Easter Monday 2nd April (go

    Soaring North West

In the North West (Lancashire) there is no F5J or ALES or anything. I have been doing this sort of thing since last century and I would drive 300 miles for a comp. I would love to have something / anything near here - Finally, I have started a Facebook page ..... "Soaring North West" My hope is that like minded people could use it to actually get something moving.
  8. Recent date changes made it impossible for me to run the comp. previously scheduled for the 1st October, this is now the new date. It may be that this is the last round of the season, but if weather permits, I do intend to get one more round flown on the 29th. But to make sure you get as many league scores in this year as possible, this one could be your last and best chance. The usual 3 classes of model can be flown, Open, 2Mtr and 100” (up to 2.6mtr allowed), and each score points in their own league. 2 entries allowed, but each must be with different class models.
  9. Breaking News Bring your suntan lotion! Don't get lost but if you do call 07760750298. Organised by Kent Interclub CD Richard Harris As previously stated, Bartletts Rules are unchanged apart from the one minor amendment relating to height limiter settings detailed below. As usual, 3 classes of model can be flown, Open, 2Mtr and 100” (up to 2.6mtr allowed), and each score points in their own league. 2 entries allowed, but must be with different class models. Please note that models must comply with BARCS class restrictions to also score in the appropriate BA

    Stupid question?

Hi, I'm seriously looking into F5J with a view to entering comps. Just when I thought I'd got all the rules nailed another thing crossed my mind... Please correct me if I'm wrong: F5J is a thermal duration comp run in a 10 minute window. Launch height is calculated and deducted from the total score. Low start heights that 'get away' are much better than higher starts that hang on in there. My dumb question is such: If you launch to say 50m but drop out quite early, can you re-launch and take another penalty (which if you then make the 10 mins might make a

  14. The next round of the league will be at Bartletts Farm, Rettendon on Sunday 13th August. Seems like ages since the last comp, so attached is a list showing league positions up to date. Interglide F5J 2017 Report and Results

This year’s Interglide over the weekend 24-25 June run by BARCS saw a necessary change from F3J to the electric launch format of F5J which proved to be very popular. Cracking flying site. Forty-seven pilots booked in. Prizes acquired, particular thanks going to UK KST agents, Flightech and C & M Rapid (Model Glasses) Ltd. for their generosity. The previous week saw fantastic weather. So what could possibly go wrong at Interglide 2017. Well, being the UK in June it’s no surprise, the weather changed for the weekend. But actually even this couldn’t put a dampener on a fantastic eve

  21. I am very happy to say that this ‘trial’ BARCS competition run to Bartletts rules was a success. We were lucky with the day, it was dry with light’ish winds sunshine rarely and cloudy. What more could you want, typical weather for the time of year. It was all a bit daunting for me as I had persuaded the committee to give it a try, so I felt under some self-imposed pressure. Added to that, it was one of the first comps at the NFC so I did not want to be the one BMFA spoke to if their property got damaged. For those who have not yet been to Buckminster, it is worth a visit. At the
  22. Bartletts 200 League 2017. Round 2 14th May will be held at the SADMAC Field (Sittingbourne & District Model Aircraft Club Kent) organised by Kent Interclub - CD Ian Nicholls Well the weather is improving so we are all on for a good competition tomorrow. Look forward to seeing you there in the garden of England. We have 28 entrants so please let me know by 8pm latest on Friday 12th May if you wish to enter to enable the team to get everything ready for Sunday. Yes that's in 1 hours time. Weather is looking better 16-17 C and winds 12mph and suspect they will go lower...
  23. The day started with 100% cloud cover and cold enough for all to be wearing coats and worm hats. With all the equipment set up and 7 landing spots in place the 27 pilots got on with the business of the comp just 10 minutes behind schedule at 10:10 and progress very well for 3 rounds before the lunch break. The morning session was tricky with generally higher launches. All groups had a few pilots doing the full 10 minutes but as it was the first comp of the year some were having equipment issues and getting zero scores. Others, like me, managed to land out. As the morning progressed the t

PROGLIDE - Home Built Composite F5J 3.8m Glider - Update

It's been over a year since I (Colin Paddon) and Kevin Beale first posted details of our home built and designed 3.8m composite F5J glider, PROGLIDE. This update brings us up to date with the project. It’s all very well designing and building your own competition plane but its not worth a lot if it turns out to be lacking in performance compared to the professionally manufactured gliders that it will be flying against. There seems to be a general misconception that home built F5J competition gliders are in some way inferior to the professional commercial offerings in terms of their flying
