    Interglide 2016 Cancelled!

With regret we announce the cancellation of the 2016 F3J Eurotour contest Interglide. Unfortunately a number of factors have conspired against organising the competition this year and the latest is the petrol shortages in France plus the air traffic controllers strike which mean that many European competitors may not be able to attend. Rather than allow entrants to book travel and accommodation which may have to be cancelled and not refunded we have made a decision to cancel the event. Instead we will be running a one day BMFA F3J league competition on Sunday 26th June, the Sunday scheduled for Interglide. It will take place at Edgcott using the F3J rules with UK variations which permits the use of winches. The entries which have been made for Interglide from UK competitors will be carried forward to this competition unless I hear otherwise. Any money paid for Interglide entry fee. camping, meals etc will be refunded less the entry fee for the revised competition.

    Interglide 2013

Although the entry was a little down on previous years, some 30 competitors enjoyed an excellent competition using the new venue at Edgecott, not far from the traditional Marsh Gibbon site. The conditions were challenging although there was often excellent lift around but the strong (15 to 20mph plus) wind did limit how far anyone could follow lift downwind. However, essentially, it stayed dry and all competitors really enjoyed the event. We had six German competitors, our faithful four regular attendees from the Netherlands, one Norwegian and the remainder made up by the UK pilots. As this international event is one of the three events which comprise the UK team selection contests for the 2014 F3J World Championships it might have been expected to have had a slightly larger UK entry but the date selected in August did not suit some – it is of course difficult to fix the dates for all the F3J Eurotour events in a way which matches everyone’s diary. No radically new models were on display but the field offered the normal crop of Maxas, Xplorers, Shadows, Tragis, Pike Perfects and Tobias Lammlein was flying one of the Pike Perfections which were being used. The choice between Vee and Cruciform tails was fairly even, the cruciform layout being (just) in the majority. As there were 30 pilots, that allowed a neat division into six teams and five groups per round. This helped significantly in allowing five rounds to be flown on the Saturday even although there were two re-fly slots and a 20 minute or so hold for a light shower. We were lucky in that although the wind never abated, a couple of serious looking spells of rain tracked down on both sides of the field without affecting the contest. The re-flys were triggered by mid -air collisions on launch, unfortunate as, at these launch speeds, significant damage is in general done to expensive models and this factor may yet prove the “Achilles Heel” for F3J as similar collisions are less likely with F5J models. John Stanswood was one of the unfortunate pilots to suffer a launch mid-air but he did not realise, at the time, his model was damaged and he continued to fly albeit with the increasing understanding that the model was not responding quite as it should. Colin Boorman was also affected by a launch mid-air – the launches at the time were directly into the sun, but he landed immediately and found that he still had a relatively unscathed model. At the end of day one the top pilots were Fred Thijssen, Colin Paddon, Mattias Schumacher, Peter Allen, Tobias Lammlein and Michael Clauss with Wim Niewenhuizen from the Netherlands bring up the seventh place. Day two featured very similar weather with a forecast for rain later in the day so a brisk start was made to complete three more preliminary rounds and so allow (after seven rounds) for a dropped score. This actually did not make a huge difference to the leader-board and the top six pilots going into the fly-off were Tobias Lammlein, Fred Thijssen, Peter Allen, Daniel Probsfeld, Colin Paddon and Michael Clauss. Three fly-off rounds were flown and these were amongst the most interesting fly-off rounds which spectators have witnessed, the air was becoming progressively more challenging and the pilots were taking advantage of the multiple re-launches now allowed so that it was very hard to keep track of relative standings. Tobias won the first fly-off round convincingly and Fred Tyijssen the second. In the second round Tobias made a rare error in re-launching to head initially for Fred’s model but he then moved downwind and dropped out whereas Fred stayed upwind in lift. Meantime Colin Paddon had clocked a couple of reasonable scores in these two fly-off rounds and, come the third (where lift was very hard to find indeed), Colin with the aid of a re-launch, managed the best time so coming once again the winner of BARCS Interglide. As the results show, Colin was followed by Tobias, Peter, Fred, Daniel and Michael – this is the fifth time that Colin has won Interglide – a quite outstanding achievement! Off the field we broke new ground with the evening BBQ. For a few years past Jim Wright of Invinghoe Soarers and his wife have produced an excellent on-field BBQ however this was becoming an onerous task so Gary Binnie had arranged that we could all join the evening BBQ being hosted by the full size gliding club at Bicester. With the much greater numbers involved (and an on-site bar) the facilities were excellent and a wide choice of food was provided however in the crowd one had to search for the model flyers but, once found, the arrangements worked well. Many people, including the German contingent, also took advantage of the gliding centre to camp there – temptation of course was to stay at the bar longer than most but with three Germans out of the six in the fly-off, it did not affect their flying performance on the following day! Interglide 2012

Prologue; Robin Sleight In some respects, much of the drama associated with this year’s Interglide took place before the event. Only four days beforehand, the field at Marsh Gibbon looked more like a lake than a flying field and, coupled with on-going forecast of further rain, there was real concern that it would be usable for the event. Gary Binnie used his contacts to get permission to use Bicester Airfield (an ex RAF grass airfield) if required but that would have meant sharing with full size gliders with inevitable airspace restrictions. The airfield however is a magnificent very large area of grass and an interesting option for possible future consideration. In the event the Marsh Gibbon field (just) dried enough for use but the weather had the final say in that Saturday was cursed by gales, gusting to 50 mph so forcing cancellation of Saturday flying and the planned on field BBQ which is a popular Saturday night event. Fortunately, with the wonders of email, the UK attendees could be kept in the picture as to the fast changing situation but obviously the overseas participants had a somewhat wasted day with no flying possible on Saturday – the first scheduled day for the event. Sunday however proved very different in that it was dry, reasonably warm and with winds initially of about 12 mph slowly dropping by late afternoon – fairly ideal for F3J. In spite of the initial uncertainty over the event, only one (UK) competitor dropped out so still leaving a decent entry, one third of which was competitors from Holland, Sweden and Cyprus. Our Dutch friends are faithful attendees of Interglide and it is always good to see them return and support the event. Interglide is the second of the three UK “National” F3J events for team selection so, as one would expect, it was well supported by the leading UK flyers. It is however the only F3J competition run in the UK to use the full FAI rules (rather than UK variations) – the key difference being the use of hand tows rather than winches. The field itself was still pretty damp so cars were kept well away from the flying area but that proved no real problem and the Sunday flying went well as described by Mike below. Epilogue; Mike Raybone As a first time organiser for Interglide, it was a stressful build-up to this event for me, what with losing Friday practice day and the planned first Saturday to heavy rain & relentless high winds. We eventually got under way at 9.20, a bit of a glitch with lane allocation making us only 20 minutes late! Robin Sleight was our CD, at the briefing he welcomed our friends from Holland, Sweden & North Cyprus, all regular attendees to our event, I too thank them for their support, long may it continue. We planned a 5 round competition with 2 fly-off rounds as the weather had vastly improved from the previous day, wind was 10/12 mph, frequently much less, a bit cloudy, but improving all day. Many discussions were taking place regarding ballast, leave it in? take it out?… Thermal conditions were best described as “variable”, many pilots being caught out at times, giving plenty of opportunities for the towmen (one of which was me), to improve their fitness levels with relaunch after relaunch, Jeez! Everything ran smoothly until round 5 slot 1, at which point the power supply for the F3J timing system laptop failed. So, with 4 rounds completed, (more than the minimum 3, which was expected), we went into a 6 man, ALL BRITISH!! 2 round fly-off, with manual timing, ably performed by Robin. Pete Allen, UK Team member for this year’s W.C.’s in South Africa, proved the worthy winner, 2nd, Colin Paddon, 3rd, Kevin Dart. Sam de Bliek, (NED), was again best junior. Many thanks to Kevin Beale for donating parachutes as prizes, and Acemodel for supplying the towlines which were also given to the top placed pilots. May I apologise once again for the cancellation of the Saturday night BBQ, but the weather would not have made it the enjoyable & fun time expected and we would all have been wading about in mud! Refunds for BBQ & camping will be issued eventually, probably at next Southern F3J. Thanks too to my CATS team, & many others, for their help & support in setting/dismantling the field kit. Mike. Interglide 2011

Interglide took place over Saturday and Sunday 25-26th June and this year overseas entry increased the number of pilots to 57. Competitors from Norway, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Turkey, Turkish Rep of N Cyprus and Great Britain. The event was held at Marsh Gibbon near Bicester on a field used for many of our F3J league events. Saturday started damp on the ground from rain the previous night and it was overcast with low cloud. The wind blew at 12-14mph, gusting 20-25 at times and this made rounds 1-3 very difficult with many pilots failing to make full time. 4 rounds were completed on Saturday finishing at around 5pm. The organisers decided to change the layout of the field as the wind was forecast to go Southerly on Sunday. All the Brits got together and made short work of moving everything in preparation for the final 3 rounds and Fly-off. The now famous “Saturday Night BBQ” started at 7pm. Jim Write and his wife Norma from the Ivinghoe Soaring Association prepared and cooked all the food. Some of us helped a little with serving, but a big thanks must go to Jim and Norma for the massive effort they put into organising the BBQ. A few beers and glasses of wine helped to get everyone in great spirit for the whole evening. It really is a treat to chat with so many people from all over the world about our favourite hobby. On Sunday the first flights started at 8.30am. The wind direction was from the south as predicted and we had set the field correctly for towing. It was overcast and misty for the first 4-5 slots of round 5 and this made it tricky for some. Quite often models disappeared in low clouds for a few seconds. Around 9.30am the sun started to burn through and it quickly became warm. Thermals were popping up everywhere and quick launches started to became common. A few pilots decided to try sub 2 second launches and it’s quiet something to see if executed correctly. The Fly-off started at around 4.15pm and conditions were good. In the first round most pilots took short tows and it was going to be down to the most accurate landing. At the start of the second round there was some crossed lines and two planes did not get a launch so the group was told to land and it would be restarted. This is the first time a lot of pilots had seen this new rule come into play. All the pilots got clean launches in round 2 and again the 15 mins slot was flown out quite easily. Round 3 saw even quicker launches in an effort by some to get the maximum flight time possible. Scores were then totalled and the results were announced. This years winner was Eser Kismir from North Cyprus, Jo Grini from Norway was second and Conny Ulvestaf from Sweden 3rd.
