    Stream NXT

I have just about finished my red NXT, but have bench flown my orange one and Gavin's yellow one :-) Hoping for acceptable flying weather on Sunday! Looks like it will come out at about 235-240g I may do a build thread when I build the orange one.
  3. Now that winter testing is fully underway, I can see the benefit of a telemetry receiver in gauging practice launch heights. I recall at last April's try it day at Buckminster that someone was using a Lemon telemetry receiver. I assume it was a Lemon LM0051. Question is will it work safely on a single Lipo? 3.7v-4.02v. Literature for an LM0051 suggests not - 4.5v min. I currently use a Lemon RX6 which runs fine for over an hour on a 1s lipo.

    1m DLG Competition?

Is there a separate competition / league for 1m class DLG’s? Apologies if I’ve missed it, but cannot find any posts on the forum.
  5. I am ordering a Revolution from Kristof and thought that if anyone else would like one, we can save on shipping. Might even be able to get shipping free. Besides knowing that Kristof makes high quality DLG's, I was impressed with it at the WC last year and I fancy giving it a go. The surface finish Kristof achieves is really good (higher grade Rohacell, I believe) and the screw-free wing fitting is really clever. So, let me know if interested. I have ordered a std wing one in orange, should take about 4 weeks. There are order forms on his website. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2940712-Compositegliders-com-Revolution http://compositegliders.com/#XXLite ( a bit sparse on info, but the order forms are there)

    Spektrum AR6270T RX & DLG's

Hi all. Has anyone out there had any experience with Spektrum AR6270T RX telemetry (vario / alt) in a DLG? I know Spekrum isn't necessarily everyone's favourite but I have a DX9 TX and use the telemetry in my larger gliders (Expro F3B) and would really like to try one out in a new DLG. Any help / guidance would be most appreciated (as long as it isn't - ditch the Spektrum kit). I'm looking at getting a new / second hand DLG as I am moving on from a Blaster 3. Any recommendations? Cheers Paul.
  7. I bought a new DLG from Armsoar and I see on the tracking that it is held in Coventry for customs inspection. I believe that this was sent from Hong Kong. Do you think there will be a tax charge? How will they notify me if there is? Do you think the customs officials will recognise what it is and not mistreat the packaging and contents etc?
  8. All pilots are welcome but BMFA insurance is a necessity. New contest pilots especially welcome. This F3K league event is to be held at Hockliffe, north of Dunstable on the A5. This is a private club site and a farm field, normally grazed by sheep. The start time will be 10:00 - please aim to arrive in time for a pilots briefing at 9:45am Entries close at 18:00 on Friday 22nd Sept. Please bring your BMFA Membership card to show for proof of insurance. An entry fee of £10 per head will be charged for this event - please be ready to pay on the day - juniors free. We have the option of flying on Saturday or Sunday (reserve day) this time. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHICH DAYS YOU CAN DO, IE 1 SATURDAY ONLY, 2 SUNDAY ONLY, 3 BOTH DAYS If you want to enter - reply or PM me, giving your AVAILABILITY, frequency and BMFA number. 9. COMPETITION CANCELLED. FORECAST TO BE TOO WINDY. BMFA F3K League 10 June 2017 Malvern. At the Malvern Soaring Association field in Upton on Severn. This is a great venue for gliding with plenty of space and apparently the weather is going to be brilliant! PM me or post here to enter with name, freq and BMFA number. Deadline for entries 1900 Thursday 8 June. I will make a call on the weather 1200 09 June and post here. BMFA membership required. £10 on the day. As always, first time competition pilots very welcome. Please arrive by 0930 latest for the first round to start at 1000. Directions to the field here. Some bonus directions as a few people have found it tricky previously: Google Maps satellite image view shows it very clearly. Exit the A4104 onto E(ast) Waterside. Drive to the end and turn right, heading back under the A4104 into the field. You'll end up driving along the Severn way pretty much. Please stick to driving along the track on the edge of the field. We'll park up about where the tent is on the Google maps image (shown as of 30/5/17). I will open the gate under the bridge from about 0800-0930 for competitors to drive onto the field, then lock it again. It can be opened again during the day if competitors need to drive in and out. Spectators are welcome, but unless they want to stay all day like competitors will need to park on the right along the slip road just off the main road. The parking here is obvious and used by locals who come to walk the footpath around the field. Our club hosts are sensitive about vehicle access to the field, and I will be too busy flying, timing and running a comp (or at least trying to) to be back and forward all day to the gate. Let me know if you have any questions. 10. Hi guys, Bit of a long shot but anyone in the Midlands/Worcestershire area up for having a fly with me? I have my new Snipe together but my flying is terrible, i thought i was getting there when i had my Blaster 3.5 but since switching to the Snipe i'm really having a difficult time and feeling like quitting dlg. I read you have to keep the speed up with these models, but since i always fly alone i have no idea what the optimal speed looks like. I'm also losing a lot of height in turns. And then there is my launch height, i don't know if it's not accurate as i can't get it to zero on the ground anyway and usually ends up reading minus 4m on the ground, but my Spektrum vario says i'm throwing to 20 meters!. Surely a relaxed throw could hit 20m? If it's right then clearly i'm doing something wrong somewhere. I know people will say come to a comp, but i don't feel anyone has time at a comp to spend with me, and i'm certainly not entering if i really am only throwing 20m, that's just shocking. So i'm looking for anyone local...ish that will fly with me and see where i'm going wrong. Maybe a radius or 60 odd miles from Redditch, i'll come to you and pay for your time.

    KST 08 servos

So, over on RC Groups they are discussing the quality and life of the KST 08 servos and they seem really hit and miss. But there are a lot more USA dlg fliers than there are UK fliers so naturally problems may show up with more of them being used over there. You guys here in the UK using them, how are you finding them? i had 4 in Blaster 3 but i didn't own that for very long and have 4 for my Vortex. But, if they are becoming a bit hit or miss, i would rather not finish the build with them and use something else, i'd rather go to something not as well spec'd but that's going to last, rather than use a servo that is great on paper but you just don't know if it's going to fail and put your model in the ground. Out of the first 4 i bought for my Blaster, i did pull 2 out and swap them as they had play in the gears at centre, the other 2 and the 2 new ones i ordered were nice and tight, the sloppy ones are currently in the Vortex to be used on the tail end with pull springs. But like i said i don't know now if i want to carry on the build with them. Id rather put the SD100 on tails but would need something that will fit in the wing. How have you guys found them? any failures or issues?

    Elf on a diet...

Just a very quick little build thread... I've wanted an Elf for a while and figured the winter period would be an ideal time to fettle one together whilst I couldn't fly. I've just finished the first of my Stream NXT's and needed a little light relief before tackling the second one. Best part of all, was it being an unstarted bargain from eBay... Following advice from a few internet threads and Boffin from here, I'd decided to modify the Elf right from the start, there are enough stories on the net about wobbly tails, pitch instability and broken fuselages to suggest that whilst the Elf is a very good model, it can be improved... I also wanted it to be as light as possible with a capability to add ballast if needed. Pictures at the bottom. First thing to do was remove the epoxy plug in the front of the fuz, this serves as a mounting for the RC gear as you will all know but it doesn't travel far enough along the boom to reinforce where the taper starts and the wall of the tube is compromised. With perseverance, removal can be accomplished and leaves the tube nice and clean for the replacement. A light but firm balsa dowel was tapered and sanded to fit, extending past the front wing mount. This was reinforced with carbon internally to provide some reinforcement local to where the taper starts. Bonded in with Zap, then cut and sanded back to follow the taper of the fuz. The balsa was lighter than the epoxy plug... To cure the wobbly tail and pitch instability, the tail was pylon mounted and the control surfaces actuated with kevlar pull threads and torsion springs. The vertical fin was stitched on around the carbon supports to reinforce the join to the fuz. I routed out some 1/32nd control horns to suit for the elevator. I thought about using tiny gear, 2gram digital servos and a tiny battery but didn't want to carry any nose weight and was concerned about the power of the tiny servos so followed advice and went for a fairly standard set up of 2 x SD100's and a 300mah single cell lipo. RX will be the Futaba 6004ff with an option for a 2 gram heavier RX if range is an issue and I need telemetry... Total weight, with CG bang on is 95 grams ready to fly Lots of thanks to Boffin for his enthusiasm and advice. Can't weight to give it a throw about now... Reg

  15. Carlos and I are getting together to fly in Richmond park next Sunday. All are encouraged to join us. Its just a 'fun' flying day but I am keen to help out any new pilots to DLG. Later I will post details of the field location for anyone who hasn't been before, but you will want to park at Sheen Gate car park and walk down from there.

    Thermal or not?

Hi guys, So i was out yesterday having a fly with my Elf and trying to set a good flight time for the challenge. Now the field i was flying from is very slightly sloped, is only slight but where we enter the field and usually stand to fly from is higher than the other end of the field. At the other end there are bushes/trees separating it from another field which are all level at that point. Yesterday while flying my Elf, it was a warm day with a nice breeze that kept picking up and dying, few big cumulus clouds about, i was flying upwind as we cannot fly downwind of where we stand, so the wind was straight on my face most of the time or slightly coming across from the lower end of the field. On one flight when the wind increased, i found a spot where the model was pushed to one side and when turning into it the nose pitched up so i started to circle and was getting some good height and would have got a good flight time out of it. But i didn't time it because i was unsure whether this could be lift from the sloping field? As still a newcomer to finding lift, i have never found lift upwind of myself as yet. The wind was directly on my face and the model directly in front of me and was going up pretty nicely, during turns i was able to hold in quite a bit of up elevator and the model would climb without stalling. In your opinion without seeing the field and being there, does this sound like genuine lift or lift off the field being sloped slightly? I was not able to climb as well again that spot for the rest of the session which makes me think it was really lift, also the higher the model was getting the stronger it seemed to be and i could turn less tightly, again leading me to believe genuine lift. I love the challenges on here and i'm a very honest person, i don't want to ever post a time, or even count it as a pb flight for myself if i haven't found a real thermal and the flight has been helped along by some other way. Mark

  18. I am going to order contact wing connectors and I can only find them available in the states. Farnell offer them, but delivered from a US warehouse. Digikey deliver pretty quickly though, and the price is good, about £1.60 a set, but to get free delivery, I need to order 32 sets. Anyone else want a couple of sets? I want to order asap, so please let me know asap! http://www.digikey.co.uk/product-detail/en/70AAJ-4-M0G/70AAJ-4-M0GCT-ND/3437853 http://www.digikey.co.uk/product-detail/en/70AAJ-4-F0G/70AAJ-4-F0GCT-ND/3767621

    Vortex 2

So, last night when i got home from work, there was a rather large box in the hallway and i new exactly what it was...yup, my new Vortex 2! (Happy Christmas to myself!) This might be a build thread, but i'll be quite a slow builder so if you follow along then i apologize. Also i currently have no manual or have found a build thread of my own and it's the first time i will have built a model with top drive so this is all new to me and the model so beautiful that i want to take my time. I've flown on and off since '98 but only quite recently got into dlg gliders. When i first asked what i should get, Richard and many other said 2nd hand and solid core wing. At the time i loved the look of the Blaster 3, but old design and hollow core wing. Naturally i didn't listen and rushed out and bought one. It's a lovely model, but compared to the Vortex it's like a dinosaur. The Vortex is just amazing, i seriously cannot get over how strong yet light this thing is. So to anyone thinking of getting into dlg gliders, save yourself a lot of money, wait, and pick up a modern design 2nd hand. Back to the model. So yeah, it's blowing my mind how strong this thing is! the wing compared to the Blaster is unreal! The fuse with it's oval boom, the tail (i went carbon rather than the colored glass tails) there is hardly any flex in this thing at all and i don't have to be careful handling it unlike my Blaster. I like the black hex bolts for the wing and tail, easily replaced unlike that tail bolt the blaster uses. The tail just plugs into the boom so you can't go wrong with lining it all up. I'm a bit nervous at doing the top drive, the wing is so nice and i'm nervous at making the pushrod hole from servo to the horn, currently reading online as much as i can and looking for other builds on the Vortex. Same when it comes to fixing in the peg/blade, the wings are too nice to be cutting, plus with the colour at the tips. I thought about fitting a Blaster peg which fits over the wingtip and then securing with a 2mm carbon rod through it. I haven't flown any other models so can't say if i find any other pegs better, i only have small hands and so far haven't found a issue with the blaster peg. All i can think of is the weight difference of the blaster vs the Vortex pegs. Gear, i'll be using KST 08 servos all round. Battery i'm not sure yet. I found my servos centered more crisp with a 4.8v nimh than they did on 1s, So i'm thinking of going with a small 2s 300mah Nanotech. Like i said, this may be a slow build so i'm not sure when the next part of the build will get posted, but in the meantime, here's a phone pic of the new model.
