  1. COMPETITION CANCELLED ---- COMPETITION CANCELLED ---- COMPETITION CANCELLED Cancellatiion of this comp will come as no surprise to you all with the weather forecast for Sunday 22nd September being particularly grim with Rain/Thunderstorms forecast. This after weeks of perfectly flyable weather. This is the third Tonbridge Club F5J comp that has had to be cancelled in succession due to adverse weather conditions. Because of this the organisers would now like to solicit your thoughts/opinion as to whether in future we should consider changing over to the Saturday/Sunday format whereby the day the comp is held on can be either the Saturday or Sunday depending on weather with preference being given to Sunday if both days are flyable. This hopefully would mean there is less chance of having to cancel a comp due to bad weather on a single day. If this format were to be adopted it would simply mean that you would have to indicate when entering which day(s) you were able to fly on. Could you please take a few minutes to post on this thread your thoughts/opinion on possibly moving over to this format. Thank you. Tonbridge club are hosting a BMFA League F5J competition at Leigh Park Farm, Nr Tonbridge, Kent on Sunday 22nd Septmber 2019. All are welcome with plenty of help available on the day for newcomers. For those flyers that paid for entry of our weather disrupted F5J comp on 16 June 2019, entry to this competition is FREE. We would ask though that you please re-enter on this thread so that we know who will be attending. Directions to the field can be found here: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Leigh+Park+Farm/@51.2091254,0.19327,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x47df4fda3f5fd36d:0xfd76d04136677dd9?hl=en The competition will be run to F5J rules with UK variations as published by the BMFA. The main points for BMFA F5J comps are: - Either Open or 2m may be flown, not both. - Motor restart may be used (results in a zero flight score), and therefore you need only to use your eSoaring switch BUT you must reset the (200m) height limit to 300m this can often be done easily by using a reader, otherwise use a computer. - As in eSoaring, you must provide a reader, so that your timekeeper can check your launch height immediately after landing. - Minimum of 4 rounds to be flown but usually 6 rounds are flown. No fly-off's. Entry fee £10.00 (BMFA requirement) payable on the day. * See Above Proof of insurance (BMFA membership card is sufficient) required Closing date for entries is 6.00pm Friday 20th September 2019 In the event that there is any doubt as to whether the event will be run due to forecasted inclement weather, a final decision will be posted on this thread by no later than 4pm on Saturday 21st September. Many of the thermals were weak and dispersed quickly, whilst others were strong but difficult to track, just one wrong manoeuvre would put your model in sinking air and the inevitable early bath. It was good to see all the competitors taking on the spirit off F5J and really trying to launch low and catch a thermal. We flew 4 slots and 6 rounds with No Fly off ,This allows each competitor a reasonable break between flights without the constant rush off trying to find time keepers ,charge batteries etc . Master pilot Simon Thornton won the competition flying an Optimus EL .He showed us how its done, launching low and working hard to maximise his slot times Pete Allen was 2nd Flying a modified Cluster ? Chris Foss was 3rd Flying a Nan Shadow Colin Boorman was 4th Flying a Nan Xplorer Thanks must go to Colin for all the computer work .He has done a superb job, Helping things to run smoothly and allowing the organisers to also be competitors. I hope to see you all at the next TONBRIDGE F5J in September. 8. This the final round of the Eastern League this year, and will take place at Little Bentley Polo Ground, nr Colchester, Essex on Sunday 25th September. This is a change of venue on previously advertised listings. As before, if weather conditions at the time indicate that Sunday is going to be un-flyable, then we would try to use Saturday 24th to avoid a cancellation.. Please indicate if you are able to enter on either day or just one. Sunday will always take precedence over Saturday as long as the weather is OK for the Sunday. Your model must have an approved height limiting/data logging device (AMRT) which must be able to show the max height your model goes to during its motor run time plus 10seconds after your motor is shut off. The limiting function must be set to allow maximum 30seconds motor run time, and the height limiting function must either be disabled or set to 300m. Motor restart is permitted at any time during flight for safety reasons, but will result in a zero score for that round. Two classes of model can be entered, either Open or 2Metre but only one entry permitted. Prizes awarded on the day and points scored will go towards the National League. The competition will be run to BMFA Local rules, 6 rounds will be flown if conditions permit and there will not be a flyoff Entry fee £10.00 (BMFA requirement) payable on the day Proof of BMFA membership (card is sufficient) required - please supply your BMFA number with your entry Timing on the day may vary, and all/any help to set up the field will be appreciated. 9. RESULTS & REPORT What a cracking days soaring it turned out to be with even the weather cooperating! With an entry of 28 pilots which dropped down to 25 on the day we looked set for a good days soaring. 25 entries ensured that it would still be one of the largest F5J comps held this year in the UK. Very pleasing for us the organizers as it makes all the considerable pre-comp work worthwhile. We are very lucky in that here in the SE corner of the country to have a lot of electric soaring pilots who are happy to support our comps. Over the past 2 years we have tried to steadily improve the organisation and equipment of our F5J comps and this time, if the comments we received were anything to go by, we have succeeded. The latest addition to the field equipment that went down a storm was a High Visibility flightline Countdown Timer that performed flawlessly throughout the day in unison with the automated computer comp running/scoring system. It also indicates what round and slot is about to fly next as well. A newly acquired high powered flightline wireless PA ensured that all pilot announcements were clearly heard on the flightline along with a separate remote PA unit facing towards the pits area from the organizers tent so that those by their cars could also hear announcements. For those that might be interested in building their own countdown timer everything you need to know including sources of the components required can be found at: http://www.gliderscore.com/Audio.aspx?DisplayBuild Onto the competition itself. The weather was overcast for the entire day but enjoyed light winds throughout. The conditions meant that launch height had to be carefully judged to suit the conditions at the time which were variable to say the least. We saw several attempts at very low launches, some of which succeeded but many failed. Such is the nature of F5J. What was obvious looking at the scores is that the pilots ability to judge launch heights had definitely improved overall compared to our last comp. I think this is down to people becoming more familiar with the class plus a bit of practice too! We saw some exceptional flying during the day from various pilots at distances where you could barely see the models. Thermaling/flying models smoothly at these kind of distances is not easy as we all know. The competition moved along at a good pace but one that still allowed for a relaxed days flying. We flew 6 rounds with a 40 minute lunch break finishing up around 5pm. It was great to see some old/new faces at the field with Alan Heber and Tim Lewis from the Isle of Wight taking the ferry over to come and visit for the day. Great to see you guys again after so many years. We look forward to seeing you two flying again rather than spectating! It was also good to see Chris Foss flying well to finish 3rd overall. Well done Chris. My thanks to the Tonbridge members who helped with the organisation. Full results, Round Scores and a selection of pics to convey the atmosphere on the day can be found below. How NOT to fly F5J

The latest round of the F5J Eastern League was very challenging for some of us. And for me it was a day of mostly wrong choices. But I did have one flight which was especially pleasing, and this download graph of the flight shows just how not to do an F5J launch. Don’t launch into sink, but if you do, don’t give up
  11. Due to another change in circumstances, this third round of the Eastern League will take place at Bartletts Farm nr.Chelmsford, Essex on Sunday 5th June, not Little Bentley as has been previously advertised on forums and in the BMFA comp. calendar. As before, if weather conditions at the time indicate that Sunday 5th is going to be unflyable, then we would hope to use Saturday 4th to avoid another cancellation.. But the plan is as usual, book in from 9am. First flight’s 10am. 12. Our first round of the league was due to be run at Bartletts Farm. But due to unforseen circumstances I am unable to run it, and the comp will now be run at the excellent Lt.Bentley site near Colchester, Essex. CD will now be Russell Mexome If weather conditions at the time indicate that Sunday 24th will be unflyable, we then hope to use Saturday 23rd. Please indicate if you are able to enter on either day or just one. Sunday will always take precedence over Saturday as long as the weather is OK for the Sunday. 13. Just in case this has now been noticed, here is a copy of the latest news via Mike Proctor BMFA-SFTC Following a great deal of hard work from people in the UK and round the World, which resulted in the introduction of F5J as a contest at FAI level, then as a World Cup event, I am very pleased to tell you all that F5J has been accepted as a World Championship class. The recent CIAM Plenary meeting also voted that a World Championship should be flown in “odd” years. This means that a first World Championship is likely to be in 2019, so still time to build that new model! This is a great result, as it had been quite possible that the first World Champs could not be until 2021, however, CIAM has recognised that F5J has attracted a very large following worldwide, thereby deserving an early move to this new status. Congratulation to all those who have had a part to play in this achievement, either by the sometimes onerous task of organising competitions, or simply by participating in events in large numbers, which eventually has demonstrated to the rule makers that this is a very popular class and is likely to remain so for a long time. Regards Mike

    The 3 wire problem

I have sometimes been asked how I deal with the 3 power wires which exit from the side of most out- runner motors. Because even if the fuselage is wide enough to mount the motor, it can be difficult to stop these 3 wires touching the rotating can part of the motor. I have tried most of the usual fixes, like gluing them to inside of the fus, or fitting a sleeve between the motor and wires, or even cutting the fus so that the wires pass outside the fus. The model I am putting together now needs a gearbox motor, but the fus is very restricted and motor wires touching the motor can is still a real risk. I have attached a few pics which I hope shows the method I use, and one I have copied from the Reisenuer website. As can be seen, I make a thin piano wire support, the ends of which are located into the front fixed part of the motor and the power wires are secured to the wire frame with heatshrink. The wire frame is effectively a spring which keeps the motor wires away from the revolving motor can, and presses them against the fus wall. Very simple and works very well.
  15. At last it is time to get ready for the first Bartletts League 200m competition. So for all those who can remember how to fly the first date is Sunday 3rd April. The format is unchanged other than the revision of our launch height rule. Entry £5 per model entered, max 2 models per person.3 classes to enter, Open, 2 Metre and 100" Please note that Sunday is always our preferred flying day. But if weather conditions look unfavourable, the preceding Saturday could be used Regular competitors will know that our flying field entrance is liable to becoming waterlogged which makes the field unusable. At the moment this is the case and we are hoping it will dry out in time for this comp. However if we cannot use Bartletts Farm our friends at Ipswich club have agreed to run the comp on their Lt. Bentley site near Colchester. Please enter the comp in the usual way by posting on to this thread with your name, class or classes to enter plus the day you can fly if you can only fly on one day and also please advise if you would travel to Lt.Bentley. 17. Due to the cancellation of several earlier soaring competitions scheduled for a Sunday we have now made the preceding Saturday a reserve day. If weather conditions at the time indicate that Sunday 27th will be unflyable, we will then hope to use Saturday 26th. Please indicate if you are able to enter on either day or just one. Sunday will always take precedence over Saturday as long as the weather is OK for the Sunday. Your model must have an approved height limiting/data logging device which will show the max height of your model during the motor run time and 10seconds after your motor is shut off. The limiting function must be set to allow 30seconds motor run time, and the height limiting function must either be disabled or set to 300m. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A BMFA MEMBER TO ENTER BUT MUST BE ABLE TO PROOVE YOU HAVE INSURANCE Directions to the field can be found here: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Leigh+Park+Farm/@51.2091254,0.19327,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x47df4fda3f5fd36d:0xfd76d04136677dd9?hl=en The competition will be run to F5J rules with UK variations as published by the BMFA. Copy of the full rules can be found here: https://bmfa.org/DesktopModules/Bring2mind/DMX/Download.aspx?Command=Core_Download&EntryId=1060&language=en-GB&PortalId=0&TabId=219 The main points for BMFA F5J comps are: - Either Open or 2m may be flown, not both. - Motor restart may be used (results in a zero flight score), and therefore you need only use your eSoaring switch BUT you must reset the (200m) height limit to 300m this can often be done easily by using a reader, otherwise use a computer. - As in eSoaring, you must provide a reader, so that your timekeeper can check your launch height immediately after landing. - Minimum of 4 rounds to be flown. - CD will announce whether or not a Fly-Off will be flown before the start. - Book in from 9am.
