Bidding farewell to the end of F3J Mark 1

It was after the CIAM Meeting in Lausanne where the go-ahead was given for winch launching, that many F3J pilots, especially in Germany, expressed dismay that hand towing might disappear. Philip Kolb came up with idea of holding the last Contest Eurotour of 2018 in Babenhausen, 15/16 September, as a special farewell, a chance for pilots old and new, for champions and faithful heroes, for all who have loved F3J over the past 20 years, to get together under the old original rules. There are still 50 or so in the 120 places available. The attachment gives details in German and English. Ausschreibung-Babenhausen-_BadL-F3J-2018-deut-engl.pdf

I was looking at the Contest Modellsport website yesterday, and noticed that they have introduced a new Eurotour class in aerobatics. Are there ever any aerobatics comps in Britain? Is there any interest in this at all?

    Interglide 2016 Cancelled!

With regret we announce the cancellation of the 2016 F3J Eurotour contest Interglide. Unfortunately a number of factors have conspired against organising the competition this year and the latest is the petrol shortages in France plus the air traffic controllers strike which mean that many European competitors may not be able to attend. Rather than allow entrants to book travel and accommodation which may have to be cancelled and not refunded we have made a decision to cancel the event. Instead we will be running a one day BMFA F3J league competition on Sunday 26th June, the Sunday scheduled for Interglide. It will take place at Edgcott using the F3J rules with UK variations which permits the use of winches. The entries which have been made for Interglide from UK competitors will be carried forward to this competition unless I hear otherwise. Any money paid for Interglide entry fee. camping, meals etc will be refunded less the entry fee for the revised competition.

    Interglide 2011

Interglide took place over Saturday and Sunday 25-26th June and this year overseas entry increased the number of pilots to 57. Competitors from Norway, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Turkey, Turkish Rep of N Cyprus and Great Britain. The event was held at Marsh Gibbon near Bicester on a field used for many of our F3J league events. Saturday started damp on the ground from rain the previous night and it was overcast with low cloud. The wind blew at 12-14mph, gusting 20-25 at times and this made rounds 1-3 very difficult with many pilots failing to make full time. 4 rounds were completed on Saturday finishing at around 5pm. The organisers decided to change the layout of the field as the wind was forecast to go Southerly on Sunday. All the Brits got together and made short work of moving everything in preparation for the final 3 rounds and Fly-off. The now famous “Saturday Night BBQ” started at 7pm. Jim Write and his wife Norma from the Ivinghoe Soaring Association prepared and cooked all the food. Some of us helped a little with serving, but a big thanks must go to Jim and Norma for the massive effort they put into organising the BBQ. A few beers and glasses of wine helped to get everyone in great spirit for the whole evening. It really is a treat to chat with so many people from all over the world about our favourite hobby. On Sunday the first flights started at 8.30am. The wind direction was from the south as predicted and we had set the field correctly for towing. It was overcast and misty for the first 4-5 slots of round 5 and this made it tricky for some. Quite often models disappeared in low clouds for a few seconds. Around 9.30am the sun started to burn through and it quickly became warm. Thermals were popping up everywhere and quick launches started to became common. A few pilots decided to try sub 2 second launches and it’s quiet something to see if executed correctly. The Fly-off started at around 4.15pm and conditions were good. In the first round most pilots took short tows and it was going to be down to the most accurate landing. At the start of the second round there was some crossed lines and two planes did not get a launch so the group was told to land and it would be restarted. This is the first time a lot of pilots had seen this new rule come into play. All the pilots got clean launches in round 2 and again the 15 mins slot was flown out quite easily. Round 3 saw even quicker launches in an effort by some to get the maximum flight time possible. Scores were then totalled and the results were announced. This years winner was Eser Kismir from North Cyprus, Jo Grini from Norway was second and Conny Ulvestaf from Sweden 3rd.
