    F5B & F3BE League entry for 2017

Morning All, I have just put up the 2017 league sign up form for F5B/F5B Inter/F3BE this year - https://goo.gl/forms/b6sG0uw9mC4dqydt1 As we have said we are willing to run an F3BE event alongside the F5B one for those who are interested in attending. In terms of rules we have a definition of the class linked below and the aim would be to fine tune those over the year with the people who attend - The idea being we are flying F3BE models on the same course as F5B models hence they need to fit in with what the main event is doing. The F3BE event will not be run to the SFTC rules as published in the BMFA handbook though we will be using a height limiter to ensure there is a level playing field. Any questions please let us know. Alan
  2. Hi All, We (Being the team who run the F5B league - Alan, Steve, Dick, Greg, Mark) wanted to gauge opinion from the F3B(e) pilots on the forum as to what interest there would be in the F5B league running an F3Be league alongside our events? We have heard the unfortunate news there will be no F3B league in 2017 and wondering if there is a way in which we can help to some degree. What we are thinking is that we can slot the F3Be pilots into each of our rounds. This means fitting into a 3:20 speed task and 10min duration with spot landing. We have had some discussion amongst ourselves and have come up with a few ideas which we wanted to float... Given we think the speed task is the one most people want to practice we were thinking along the lines of: Round 1 - 2 x Speed (Which would involve climb to height limited altitude ie 200m and then do a speed run. Climb back to altitude and do a 2nd speed run) and then climb back to altitude and do 10 minute duration. We would expect the speed part of this task to take about 2 minutes per pilot - ie 20 sec climb - 10/20 sec to position plane and then speed run of up to 20 secs. The duration side of the timing would start when the motor is turned off. Round 2 - Distance task - We need to work out a time (2 to 3 minutes) for this but would be climb to altitude and then do as many legs in that time period as possible - All on one side of the course. Then after time is complete climb to altitude and do 10 minute duration task with spot landing. Round 3 - As Round 1 Round 4 - As Round 2 This way if the full 4 rounds were flown each pilot would have 4 speed sessions and 2 distance sessions. We could of course just drop the duration and do 3 or 4 climbs for speed - Depends on how many climbs a typical plane can manage. This is where we need input from the pilots to align the tasks with the abilities of the planes. A couple clarifications for starters - Electric Only (No winches) / 1 plane on the speed - distance task at a time / Need to use a height limiter which cuts the motor at x height / All flying in speed and distance tasks is done on one side of the course. The scoring would be normalised per round. But the exact details of this we can work out once we have interest What do people think? Open to ideas on what we can do with the Rounds but trying to find ways that having a slower climbing model wouldn't impact on a persons score. If people are interested we could hold a practice day in Jan / Feb to try out various methods and see how things work out. Alan
  3. Hey everyone! A question most likely for F3x competitors, what type of boxes do you use to get your models on a plane, or what have you seen in use? I've been trying to find something big enough to take a few F3K size planes, but not dramatically expensive neither. I looked at the type of transport box Hyperflight is selling, though it doesn't fill me with confidence as to the strength of one (selling a damaged box at half price now). I thought of adapting one of the Ski plastic boxes that can accommodate up to 4/5 sets of skis, but getting one big enough in UK, not to mention the price, is giving me a headache. I'm not desperate for one yet, but by next year I will. Thanks for help in advance Eryk

    BMFA Silent Flight Nationals 2016

Without a suitable field being available to hold an event with all SF classes being represented in one place, this year the SF Nats competitions will be held at various locations. 4 classes will be hosted at Wetlands over August Bank Holiday weekend 27th - 29th August Saturday – F5J; Sunday – F3J & 2M eSoaring; Monday – Open eSoaring Camping on site will be available. (Note - dogs are not allowed at Wetlands) Entry to these events and camping reservation, will be by website topics (BARCS & eSoaring), from mid July, with payment being made at the first competition attended. 100S will be held at Twywell on Sept 4th – look for website announcements. F5B League event on July 16/17, will also count for the Nats trophy. F3B League event on July 30/31, will also count for the Nats trophy. F3K will be announced later. Links to the forum entry topics will appear here shortly. Mike Proctor
  5. May be worth making this a sticky please Austin............. Invicta Model Flying Club will be hosting an Open F3B Speed Contest on the weekend of the 15th and 16th October in Sutton Valence. (For clarification, This event is organised by Tom Saitnet, Myself and in conjunction with Invicta Model Flying Club, and currently has no connection to the BMFA F3B League). Weather call nearer the date as to which day the contest will be on ! This is an open taster competition, to allow a wider audience the opportunity to view F3B first hand and also enter there F3J, F5J, Hotliner or any other glider to have a go at tearing up the F3B course. If you are interested in seeing what F3B is all about, please come let me know below. All welcome..... F3B is winch launched multi-task soaring model typically of a composite construction, roughly around 3 meters span. Full house controls, Rudder, elevator, Aileron and Flaps. Light weight versions of Typical F3F models, however in recent designs in F3F models are trending toward wing section specifically aimed at Speed on the F3F course. What is F3B Speed I hear you ask ? Speed is simply that you fly 4 legs of a 150 meter long course as fast as you can go, including three turns. Speed is generally flown in a 4 minute slot, with the pilot flying his/her model on the course one there own against the clock. Fastest time wins, simple as. Relaunches are allowed, providing that you haven't made and attempt (Entered the course.) Typically, F3B models are flown with ballast for speed course, and its not the case of full either, as you may not have the lift or wind to bite into during launch to allow you to carry the weight. Tactics are employed here, using the relaunch and trying to find that illusive thermal, to gain height before the attempt. I will update this thread when I have more details nearer the time. thanks for looking Jon

    Design data needed

Hello F3x people, I'm working on a little design project, to come up with a dedicated set-up stand for f3f and f3b and maybe also f3j models. One aspect of it may allow super easy measurement and set up of CoG, integrated with the stand. I would be really grateful if people could share with me some design data, to help with the fine tuning of my ideas. Specifically 1. Approx Range of CoG for your F3f/F3b/F3j model. Ball park figures needed - no need to give away your winning edge ;-). At the moment I am working on 95mm +/-10mm - would this cover most competition models? 2. Range of flying weight would be very useful for stiffness and strength requirements. 3. Wing chord if you know it - there are a lot of good drawings out there, so this parameter is something that is reasonably easy for me to gather. 4. Fuselage width and depth, behind the wing TE. This list is a 'nice to have' - if you can just share the CoG range , that would be great. many thanks, Chris
  7. From Mike Proctor, its a concern ! We have just been informed that it is most unlikely that we will have use of Cranwell for the SF Nats. Negotiations have been "difficult" this year and for some time this outcome has been on the cards. Indeed we have only just got final permission for the FF Nats in 5 weeks time! Frankly there seems to be no real reason behind this, other than that we are something they don't need at Cranwell. The fight goes on but prospects are low, at best. Clearly we need to make alternative provision for the SF Nats and fairly quickly. Points to consider are:- * We do not have a field anywhere, big enough to do 3 events/day. Several attempts by Chris Moynihan to find such a place were made relatively recently without success. The last time we were in this predicament we settled for a "split" Nats based on Pure gliders and E Gliders. * If we cannot have Cranwell we would probably be best advised to avoid Aug BH when quite a few people would like to go to Barkston. * If we were to spilt into F3K/B/J + 100S and F5J/F5B eSoaring Open + 2M we would have 4 events each to cram either into a weekend or possibly 3 day weekends. Each location would need camping on-field or locally *Where could these events fit into a calendar already sorted for 2015? I could offer Sept 12/13 which is scheduled as Wetlands Weekend anyway, for E Gliding but is only 2 weeks away from the Barkston Nats Could P Gliding go into early August, to be 2 or 3 weeks away from Nats but make both SF Nats a month apart. Would Edgecot be availabe? (It may well be that some CD's are not available on these dates) This is no more than a starter-for-10, written quickly after receiving the news from Dave Phipps. I look forward to your comments and realise that we need to think this through carefully but quickly, if it involves changing other events. Other then using the Wetlands, or try to find another venue and hold on a different day from main Power Nationals.
