Morning All, I have just put up the 2017 league sign up form for F5B/F5B Inter/F3BE this year - https://goo.gl/forms/b6sG0uw9mC4dqydt1 As we have said we are willing to run an F3BE event alongside the F5B one for those who are interested in attending. In terms of rules we have a definition of the class linked below and the aim would be to fine tune those over the year with the people who attend - The idea being we are flying F3BE models on the same course as F5B models hence they need to fit in with what the main event is doing. The F3BE event will not be run to the SFTC rules as published in the BMFA handbook though we will be using a height limiter to ensure there is a level playing field. Any questions please let us know. Hi All, We (Being the team who run the F5B league - Alan, Steve, Dick, Greg, Mark) wanted to gauge opinion from the F3B(e) pilots on the forum as to what interest there would be in the F5B league running an F3Be league alongside our events? We have heard the unfortunate news there will be no F3B league in 2017 and wondering if there is a way in which we can help to some degree. What we are thinking is that we can slot the F3Be pilots into each of our rounds. This means fitting into a 3:20 speed task and 10min duration with spot landing. We have had some discussion amongst ourselves and have come up with a few ideas which we wanted to float... Given we think the speed task is the one most people want to practice we were thinking along the lines of: Round 1 - 2 x Speed (Which would involve climb to height limited altitude ie 200m and then do a speed run. Climb back to altitude and do a 2nd speed run) and then climb back to altitude and do 10 minute duration. We would expect the speed part of this task to take about 2 minutes per pilot - ie 20 sec climb - 10/20 sec to position plane and then speed run of up to 20 secs. The duration side of the timing would start when the motor is turned off. Round 2 - Distance task - We need to work out a time (2 to 3 minutes) for this but would be climb to altitude and then do as many legs in that time period as possible - All on one side of the course. Then after time is complete climb to altitude and do 10 minute duration task with spot landing. Round 3 - As Round 1 Round 4 - As Round 2 This way if the full 4 rounds were flown each pilot would have 4 speed sessions and 2 distance sessions. We could of course just drop the duration and do 3 or 4 climbs for speed - Depends on how many climbs a typical plane can manage. This is where we need input from the pilots to align the tasks with the abilities of the planes. A couple clarifications for starters - Electric Only (No winches) / 1 plane on the speed - distance task at a time / Need to use a height limiter which cuts the motor at x height / All flying in speed and distance tasks is done on one side of the course. The scoring would be normalised per round. But the exact details of this we can work out once we have interest What do people think? Open to ideas on what we can do with the Rounds but trying to find ways that having a slower climbing model wouldn't impact on a persons score. If people are interested we could hold a practice day in Jan / Feb to try out various methods and see how things work out. Alan

Still trying to familiarise myself with the various classes, rules and derivatives and I wonder if someone can help clarify the following for me please? Referring to the 2017 FAI Sporting Code for F5_Electric. 5.5.4 CLASS F5B – RC ELECTRIC POWERED MOTOR GLIDERS 5.5.4.1 Definition <skip a bit> The maximum amount of energy to be used in one flight is 1750 W*min Can I check my understanding of this? My 100S electric glider consumes just less than 500W on full power. Without a limiter, I can reach 1000ft in 30 seconds which is enough for a 10 minute still air flight. Am I correct in assuming that I have consumed 500 * 1/2min = 250W*min power for this run? Does that mean I could potentially run the motor for 3.5 minutes during the combined tasks? The numbers don't seem right to me. I can see that there is a penalty for exceeding the total power*time allowance but no bonus for using less than the allocated power. Back to the definition This contest is a multi-task event for RC Electric Powered Motor Gliders including two tasks: (Note - including two tasks implies that there could be more - I suspect that may be my misinterpretation) 1) Distance 2) Duration and landing These two tasks are executed without interruption in one flight. That seemed clear but when I read further down, 5.5.4.5 (a) This task begins when the model aircraft is hand-launched and ends after 200 seconds. Time of release is to be taken by one timekeeper. and 5.5.4.6 (a) This task must be completed within 600 seconds from the moment the audio signal is given. seem to suggest that the tasks are separate or is the audio signal given at the end of the distance task? In a contest, is there only ever one model in the air at any one time or are launches staggered? I am probably being a bit thick so can someone put me right please? Thanks

Without a suitable field being available to hold an event with all SF classes being represented in one place, this year the SF Nats competitions will be held at various locations. 4 classes will be hosted at Wetlands over August Bank Holiday weekend 27th - 29th August Saturday – F5J; Sunday – F3J & 2M eSoaring; Monday – Open eSoaring Camping on site will be available. (Note - dogs are not allowed at Wetlands) Entry to these events and camping reservation, will be by website topics (BARCS & eSoaring), from mid July, with payment being made at the first competition attended. 100S will be held at Twywell on Sept 4th – look for website announcements. F5B League event on July 16/17, will also count for the Nats trophy. F3B League event on July 30/31, will also count for the Nats trophy. F3K will be announced later.
