    Multiplex Astra/Avanti

Along with the Arriba came an untouched kit of a Multiplex Astra. It's a two or three channel model, not unlike a Middle Phase but with a fibreglass fuselage. Airbrakes are optional, the very nice foam veneer wings have been pre-cut for them. There is no provision for ailerons. The tailplane is built up from strip wood, a towhook is provided but the wing joiner is a single wire, winch launching is mentioned in the instructions!! The Avanti is an ELG version, I assume it would come with a fuselage modified for a motor but would otherwise be identical. There is a red spot on the box artwork under the name to indicate what version is in the box (Chris Foss does the same with the Middle Phase/Phase 6 'trainer/advanced or pro' etc). I'd not heard of either of these designs before, I don't really need a two-channel model but it would be nice for an ISA Nostalgia Day and I enjoy building high quality kits. Cheers Gary
  2. It's back! After a long time away Multiplex have re-acquired the Alpina name and are releasing a new all moulded 4m version, the Alpina Carbotec. This time it's manufactured by Tomahawk Aviation and is priced at 1200 Euros in electric and unpowered versions... There is also a smaller 3.3m one with a T tail (again in electric and pure sailplane), the Antaris… (880 Euros) At these prices I think they could be pretty popular, especially if the Tangent quality issues have been sorted out. Multiplex Arriba

Continuing my quest to collect dusty old Multiplex gliders I managed to obtain an Arriba last week. As a bit of non-news the Multiplex Flamingo I restored last year still hasn't flown! Along with the Arriba came an unbuilt kit of an MPX Astra, I will start a separate thread on that. I hadn't heard of the Arriba, it is an ELG version of the Schampus apparently (which I had vaguely heard of). The Arriba is 3.4 metre span and appears to use the wings from the DG600 of the same era (or it could be the other way around!). The model is in flyable condition but as usual I will give it a birthday. The wings are glassed but could do with a repaint, the fuselage gel coat is very good but I'm not a fan of the purple trim colour. The original tailplanes (fitted in the photos) have been driven over by accident, they are actually ok apart from some spanwise cracks. A spare tailplane was provided. The spinner is a little bit over in diameter, looking at it I was thinking about removing the motor and flying it as a pure glider, dunno. Cheers Gary

    Multiplex Flamingo Contest

Hi folks, Just been messing around in the shed with my latest acquisition, a Multiplex Flamingo Contest. It was one of those eBay jobs where I hoped someone would outbid me but they didn't!! Thought I would share a few photos and other gen on this glider, they were quite popular 'back in the day'. I think this one dates from the late 1990s. I have a soft spot for the MPX gliders from this era, just great quality I think, over the last few years I've collected an ASW22, DG600 and a Fiesta. I have the instructions on PDF, they're still downloadable from Multiplex's website. The wings (veneered foam) are in quite good condition and just needed a run over with the covering iron and the ailerons re-hinging with tape. Tailplanes are also good, they are a lifting section and I think are meant to be fitted flat side up. The fuselage has been cracked and repaired, some filler and paint would have it looking better but I'm on the look out for a good fuselage if anyone has one kicking about. It has an aerotow release and servo which I'll probably remove, there is a winch/bungee hook but I'll most likely be sloping it only. It weighs around 2.4 kg which is lighter than I remember when I lifted one up on Crook Peak a few years ago, but still hefty! It's possible that model had ballast bars in it, this Flamingo has ballast tubes and I have some original MPX ballast which came with the Fiesta. Will add photos in the next posts, cheers. Gary
  5. I have recently been getting low signal alarms whilst flying my willow II between 100-150 metre range at white sheet. I'm now considering selling all my rx's dumping the radio in the bin & jumping ship. But what manufacturer do I go. My models are varied from an electric carbon Z cub to my willow ll f3f to a radian pro weasel trek etc etc & soon to be two scale model gliders an ASW 20 at 1.35 scale & a pic 20 at one quarter scale.
  6. Hello all, I've had some issues recently with charging various NiMH tx and rx batteries. I'm using a Multiplex Multicharger LN-5014, which has given trouble-free use for many years, so I don't know if I'm getting the charge rates wrong or the charger has developed a fault. I use the charger for LiPos with no apparent problems, but I worry if there is a fault, whether or not the charger is unsafe. The problem is that the charger seems to keep pumping in the mA with a reported mAh way over the stated capacity of the battery pack. Examples - over 2500mAh in a multiplex 2000mAh pack, charged at 200mA, over 1000mAh in a 600mA 2/3AA Overlander pack, charged at 100mA (the charger won't go below 100mA i.e. to 0.1C=60mA). The batteries in both cases were warm as a result and I stopped the charge. 1. Has anyone else experienced this issue with the multiplex charger? 2. Should I be concerned about the state of the batteries (they seem to be working just fine) 3. What charge rates do people out there use for the rx batteries? I was surprised to read on a pack I bought recently that a fast charge of 1C can be used (after an initial cycle at 0.1C). Is this now the norm for modern rx batteries? any help/advice you can give would be gratefully received. With more models (and hence rx packs) to fly, it would be great to be able to charge them quicker! cheers, Ribs

    Multiplex Solius

I first saw the new Multiplex Solius whilst at the recent Pyrenees Cup F3F event - Matthieu Mervelet and Pierre Rondel were having a great time with theirs, whilst the rest of us with just gliders were grounded. It is a great looking model, and seemed to be very good at just about everything. It thermalled very well in the light conditions, it climbed quite quickly on the standard motor, and was reasonably quick. It also did some great aerobatics. Martin Newnham was at the F3F comp with me, and was also very impressed. We decided that on our return to the UK we would each get one for a bit of competitive flat field flying. We were both disappointed when we got back that it had not yet launched in the UK, and we would need to wait a month for the RR (Rx Ready) version to arrive. Unfortunately even that got delayed further, so we both splashed out on the Kit version and standard motor pack from TJD models. A couple of evenings work and we both had our models ready, so this morning we maidened them. Not ideal conditions, as there was a blustery 15mph or more wind, but there were some thermals as well. The model went straight from the hand, climbing well. I have an altimeter/vario on board, so cut the throttle at about 150m, zooming to about 190m. The model settled down straight away, cruising well. I found a thermal fairly quickly and followed it for a few minutes, getting up to about 300m. It turns very well - the controls are well balanced, and the CG at the recommended position seemed spot on. I was now a long way downwind, but the model returned into the strong wind very well, without losing much height. The first flight was maybe 20 minutes, and concluded with a combination of powered and unpowered aerobatics over our patch. I landed, and on recharging the battery it only needed 170mA in the 2200mAh LiPo, so it seems to sip power, even on the climb. Conclusions: An excellent model that fully met my (fussy) expectations. It really is quite a good all rounder. It thermals very well. It aerobats well, and it looks great (at least to my eyes). It is also great to have a model that stacks down quickly into its small carry box, protecting it in the car. The foam is quite dense, but does dent fairly easily. Other than that I really have nothing I dislike about it. It deserves to become a very popular model. Simon

    8 Pin Multiplex connectors

Hi I saw recently that an 8 pin "multiplex" connector exists. Possibly quite handy for the kind of model that has multiple wing servos or where you are having to run the entire wing off one greenie (e.g four servo, one piece wing). It gives you more pins for power. So you could for example run 4 servos with the 4 signal wires, and 2 pairs of + and - pins. 8 pin multiplex connector 8 pin multiplex connector with surround Cheers Tom
