  1. It's back! After a long time away Multiplex have re-acquired the Alpina name and are releasing a new all moulded 4m version, the Alpina Carbotec. This time it's manufactured by Tomahawk Aviation and is priced at 1200 Euros in electric and unpowered versions... There is also a smaller 3.3m one with a T tail (again in electric and pure sailplane), the Antaris… (880 Euros) At these prices I think they could be pretty popular, especially if the Tangent quality issues have been sorted out. Slope Racer - Tony Fu

Hello, I am looking for Tony Fu from Slope Racer, last December I paid him for a Schwing, full install and build, I was told the model would be ready by April, well April, May, June and July all came and went, I contacted Tony a couple of times in June and was told the model was on the bench and would be one week before it was finished, then nothing, phoned him numerous times and either voice mail or the phone is turned off. I understand that model builds can go late but to just cut off a customer who has paid alot of money is just not the game. I am looking for him to request all the money back, if this happens all well and good, if not I have to go through the legal system, this process is now very swift and happens within 2 weeks of my application been accepted by the High Court Office. After this point the debtor is responsible for all costs, the cost of the High Court process, the on site visits by the Sheriff's officers. I was unfortunate to do this last year with a debtor to me, he owed £ 1250-00, he ended up paying over £ 1650-00 in the debt and the costs. I would like to give Tony Fu the option of paying before I start this process but so far no responses to my calls. This is just not the way to do business at all Any info would be good. Thank you Andy

    Bwlchfest 2017

There will be a new slope soaring event at the Bwlch, S Wales being held over the weekend of June 10th & 11th. I created the following teaser of a video and popped it on YouTube and various Facebook groups, and the response has been amazing. The idea is that like minded glider guiders come along to The Bwlch for a weekend of informal flying on a "Fly for Fun" basis. It doesn't matter if you fly foamies, crunchies, mouldies, F3F, scale, PSS, aerobats or sport models, all are welcome. The feedback I have received already has been amazing from glider guiders all over the UK and, a European contingent from Germany and Slovenia are already making plans to attend this event, including a guy I know from Germany who writes for a aero modelling magazine there called Aufwind, and a piece about this event will appear in this magazine, probably in February . So this could become a truly international event. Details will be updated regularly on my BLOG and also on the Facebook group page, Slope Soaring in Wales. We hope to see you there.

    2015 Kerry Glide-in.

Hi all, this slope-oriented event in the west of Ireland will be held this year on 23-24 May 2015 (this will be the "core" weekend, some participants will be coming for a longer period, most in the week running up to that weekend). Please PM me for more details or any information you may need. This year I have to limit numbers mainly due to limited parking on our slopes, so the sooner you can confirm the better. If anyone wants a brochure (a pdf. file) explaining where our main slopes are in Co. Kerry, with maps, directions, etc. please just PM me your email address! Hope to see you in "The Kingdom of Kerry"! Chris
  6. Hi ensemble, I am planning a trip this summer to come flying with my son, in UK. We will come in a caravan and are searching for great slopes. The location is still not decided. We were in Cornwall already a couple of years ago. We did fly at White Horse also (we were in UK several times ...). What we have in mind is something on South coast or South Galles (Cardiff etc), but other suggestions are welcome. The goal is to fly on dynamics (maybe dynamic soaring, when possible) with fast and aerobatic planes. We are searching for landboard and power kiting sites too, so better if there are the two possibilities in the neighbourhood. Any suggestion and advice will be really appreciated! Thanks a lot and best regards, Ric P.s.: I hope this is the right section for this post, otherwise please move it.

    Caravanning and flying models

Hi ensemble, after a search on this forum I did not find a lot about this subject, so I would start a discussion about it. I am not new to camping, nor flying, but am about caravanning. So it would be nice to know other's experiences about travelling towing a caravan and a car full of gliders. From my side I have few questions from start. I will come in UK at end of July and head toward South Wales. I had already from some of you (thank you very much ) several suggestions about slopes etc. I would like to know right know how it goes about campings. Is it mandatory to book or we will find place with ease (South Wales, around Swansea etc.)? We would eventually move a couple of times, one being the Welsh fest. Is it allowed, in general, in UK to stay for a night on highways or other stops? I'm installing a 100W solar panel, with a 105Ah battery, for several reason. I guess I would be almost independent from mains, but don't know how it would be, dealing with UK weather. Having been a dozen times in UK I know it is really varied . I don't have a TV (what? camping watching TV !?, I guess we will be very busy repairing gliders ...), just few lamps, water pump and, of course, battery chargers. A PC will be used to do some RC related works, for short time. Would this be enough in UK for our usages? Other experiences, suggestions, impressions etc will be really appreciated. Thanks and best regards, Ric
  8. I bought several old balsa gliders from a guy that I think enjoyed building more than flying. The most interesting are two tailless gliders that are similar but not quite the same, one at 60" span (not flown) and the other just 36". They are around 20 years old (two Futaba FP-T5N Callenger Txs came in the lot), the method of mixing the elevons is mechinical at the servos. The link to the elevons are just rods out of the fuselage that sits between to rods out the end of each elevon. I've attached some photos below, does anyone know what they might be? Name? maker? and where the CoG might be - or where I should start with one? Hope you guys can help Tony

    flyingwings.co.uk Hawk

I was looking for a little foamie to throw in the slope to have some fun and not worry about breaking anything in crashes. I was flying a flyingwings.co.uk Slipstream 1m delta-wing so far, but motorized. The wing was mostly indestructible, but was getting a bit floppy after lots of battering. I learned flying with this thing, 'landed' it hard on a regular basis. The wing took it well, but the motor not, the motor mount kept bending over at every crash and therefore I almost never had a straight angle of thrust. And I placed the battery so that it needed a big pack to have the right CG. It became a bit of a pain to fly, and after all - who needs a motor? Anyway. I knew that the SAS Wildthing is really nice looking and robust. But the website had some issues lately and I liked the fact that I can get all the building material at flyingwings.co.uk so that is where I went in the end. I like the looks of the hawk. It's a real bird of prey with those forward swept wings. It's probably not quite as indestructible as the Wild Thing, especially the tail feather. But I feel pretty good about it so far. I have not finished the build yet, but a few things so far. I used the laminating film they sell ant flyingwings. And I'm so glad I did. It is so incredibly robust and smooth. Way way better than strapping tape. Irons on like a dream and becomes really stiff. I put three layers on the leading edge, you barely see the layers but it's bomb proof. Unfortunately the colored tapes flyingwings sells is still crap. Covering is really bad, especially on black foam. Really a shame that they always use white foam on the pictures but send you black, where no color really works on. The foam is not very dense and has pretty big pores. Not the greatest stuff really. But perhaps normal for hot wire cut foam. The cutting is not very precise, especially the foam around the fuselage has warped quite a bit and has huge gaps. And the corners are a bit crusty and need sanding down. I soaked the whole fusilage in hot glue. I like treating the surface of EPP with a film of hot glue, that makes it ultra tough. (Also adds some weight) I will probaby find that this was overkill, but it will certainly increase longevity. The laminating foil is probably way strong enough. The elevons are light balsa. Way too flexible for the job. I would prefer dense balsa or ply. Or even just good old correx with a carbon spar glued in. I can't tell you how it flies yet. I will finish the build tomorrow or so and keep you updated. But i don't think I get a chance to actually fly anytime soon... I really did not want to tape the whole wing. But this black is really not working. I might end up having no choice. Klingon bird of prey

    Slermalling

I was noticing some advice being given elsewhere about using thermal lift and thought I would like to contribute some of my limited experience to the topic, just not on that site. I've put it here as I fly slope and use thermals to get me out of trouble on the odd occasion and the advice was given with regard to slope flyers not ever using thermal lift. One piece of advice that made me want to pipe up was 'to fly slow enough to recognise the tell tail signs of lift'. I quite strongly disagree with this and in my limited experience it is much easier to recognise a thermal when you hit it at speed. Secondly, the last thing I want to be doing is pootling around on the edge of a stall hoping that my plane will miraculously rise. You can search a much larger area at speed and the amazing thing about gliders is that they are much more efficient (don't know if that is technically true) at keeping a shallow glide angle at speed (it just may not LOOK like it). Another thing I try to do is think about the topography and landmarks of the place. Thermals are air warmed by the ground staying on the ground until they 'pop' off. At the Wrecker, that is normally out to the north and away from the slope quite a way. On Mickeys they seem to stay off the slope and travel up the valley. At Mickeys West they seem to go to the bowl to the left. Anyway, thermal lift at a slope is amazing and playing with it from height is a great confidence builder as trying to find it for the first time when you NEED it is quite scary and often ends in a long walk with a bin bag. I am not very experienced with slermal lift so would like to know if I am passing on incorrect advice and would also appreciate other's input. Looking forward to some reply's
