  1. BMFA League Reserve 2 will take place on Sunday 16th September at Whitesheet. In the event of an unfavourable wind direction, Stu has also managed to procure the use of the Rifle Range slope by kind permission of the Avon hang gliding & paragliding club which is not normally open to model flyers. We also have an option to run the competition at the Bwlch as a last resort if the wind direction is unsupported by any of the above slopes. Weather call and slope decision will be made on the evening of Friday 14th. Entry for the competition will open on Wednesday 5th September at 10 p.m. and will close on Wednesday 12th September at 10 p.m. We are also now requesting that payment for league competitions is done through PayPal on the entry form. We will accept cash on the day, but pre-payment through PayPal will be preferred as it makes life easier for the organisers.
  2. Entry is now open for BMFA F3F League 2 at Whitesheet on 3rd June http://www.gbsra.co.uk/competition-entries

    Whitesheet "OPEN SLOPES" '17

Update 13/5/17 As I will be busy all day tomorrow (Frome Chess Congress if anyone wants to come and spectate ;-) ) where I won't have access to the internet, I have decided to make the weather call for Sunday now. Crazy talk. It's ON! The weather looks suitably good for a jolly nice day's flying at Whitesheet, with a gentle to moderate SW breeze forecast. Some wet stuff may make an appearance later in the afternoon, but I wouldn't be too concerned about this if you would like to come along and have a fly. Fingers crossed for a good inaugural event! cheers, Chris Update 9/5/17 Please come along to Whitesheet hill this Sunday and have a fly with like-minded pilots at the first of the 2017 social fly-ins. All are welcome! A weather call will be made on Saturday around noon, with the decision being posted both here and on the club website: www.whitesheet.org.uk The club has recently altered its rules with respect to power assist models - this means that only a gale or rain will prevent us from flying - just remember to pack an electric assisted model (motors are now permissible for altitude gain at the hill). Please note that these events are taking the place this year from our usual competitions - the idea is just to get people together to enjoy the beautiful site. The club and the hill looks forward to seeing you! cheers, Chris Lamming WSRFC Open Fly-in Event at Whitesheet Downs, Wiltshire. Please see the flyer below! 2017_Events_flyer.pdf

  10. Dear flyers at Whitesheet and those who visit, Please note that there has now been a rule change to the flying restrictions at Whitesheet Hill. Many of you will have flown at this wonderful site in Wiltshire (and may be members of the club) and will know that for most of its life, the site has been for unpowered models only. In 2009 a trial was started to allow electric power to be used for height gain only. Electric models in general terms were not permitted. Following this successful trial period of many years, the club has now ratified changes to the club rules to allow this change permanently. The matter was voted on at the AGM, following discussions and work with both the BMFA and the National Trust, both of whom fully support the proposed changes. With immediate effect, electric assist can be used at Whitesheet for height gain, with the following section added to the club handbook: The following definitions have been agreed by the WSRFC committee and will serve to clarify amendments to the rules on powered model flying: Glider A model sailplane with no form of propulsion system fitted. Any model designed to fly and climb solely by slope or thermal lift, falls into this category. Self-Launching Glider A model sailplane whose primary flight mode is unpowered soaring. Such a model may have an electric propulsion system used to gain altitude, at the beginning of a flight, when slope lift is insufficient or is not working on one of the available slopes. All other radio controlled aircraft This category is a cover-all for any flying model that does not fit into either the Glider or Self-Launching Glider definitions above. Types of model that may fly All forms of Glider as defined above may be flown from the Whitesheet hill, in the areas and slopes identified in the sections above. New for 2017, Self-launching Gliders will be permitted to fly at Whitesheet, within the rules of the club. It is vital that flying of such models be conducted with respect for the peace and beauty of the area and that the good reputation of the club, both with the National Trust and with the public, is maintained. Only electric propulsion may be used to gain altitude. Internal combustion engines or gas turbine engines are not permitted, in order to ensure the least possible noise intrusion from the power phase of a flight. Models that are designed to rely on the propulsion system for sustained flight are not permitted. This includes hotliners and other types of electric powered model that have not been designed to seek out and exploit lift. Undoubtedly, there will be a period of adjustment, where the above rule changes will require review. In the event of justified negative feedback from the public, from the National Trust or from other flyers, the allowance of electric power for climb out may be revoked. No model aircraft, other than those described as Gliders or Self-launching Gliders may be flown from Whitesheet hill. This includes (but is not limited to) multicopters, quadcopters and helicopters. The hope is that more flying can take place at Whitesheet, more of the time. I also hope that these changes will encourage greater membership and better participation in future events at the hill, as our flyers will be encouraged to make the journey and meet up, knowing that the weather conditions have a lower impact on whether or not they will get some flying in. If you have any questions relating to this change, please don't hesitate to contact me by PM or post here. For more details about the club, please visit www.whitesheet.org.uk best regards Chris Lamming Chairman, WSRFC

    English Open 2016

All, With no small regret, their will not be an English Open F3f competition held this year at Whitesheet Radio Flying club. Unfortunately (or perhaps just the opposite!) there are so many f3f events planned for 2016 that jiggling the calendar along with other club comps, Scale events and general national events (such as the BMFA Power Nats etc) provided no solution. The committee felt that tying to shoe-horn the event in would either pull flyers away from other great competitions, or would be poorly attended and therefore not fitting for such a great event that has run so well in the past. We very much hope to set our date for 2017 super-early (sometime this year) and perhaps in future the comp will be a biennial event. best wishes, Chris WSRFC
