If Not A Stingray, Then What?

Recommended Posts

Having recently thrown my rattle out the pram because of the wait to get a Stingray and Prismaray wings. I am left wondering what other models might fit the bill. Im looking for something scale or scalish which will be fully aerobatic in big coastal winds. I want it to be about 3m size and easy to launch without a helper. It has been suggested to me that a big Swift or Fox would fit the bill, but no-one has suggested a specific model. Oh and cost, up to a grand but half that would be nice.

Any pointers gratefully received

Roger

I have had a look at the Fox, but am worried its not going to withstand the kind of aerobatics I want it to do. (similar to the Stingray video). Would anyone care to comment on the strength of the Fox?

I had a WingsandMore 'ray, and also an X-models Heavy Slope 'ray. Both sold, the latter sold before flying. How could I do without a 'ray in my life you ask with tears in your eyes? Because, I answer, in the interim I had finished my 2.8 m L-213A (Valenta). This remains my favorite scale aerobat (even the Baudis carbon Salto hasn't quite eclipsed it in my heart yet). It's hugely capable, easy to handle, fast, gorgeous in the air, just ticks all my boxes.. Strong too...

Along the same lines as Chris.....

Just over your budget, but it's probably the finest slope aerobat that I've been lucky to fly. It would take any level of punishment.

Very interested in the 1/5 scale L213A, not sure I want to go as big as the 1/3 (yet). For ordering do you deal directly with valenta please ?

The reichard Fox wouldnt take the punishment you are talking about.....lovely plane but you would kill it in big winds at the coast ......slopedragons suggestions are well worth checking out ...he is one of the best big aero people ive seen fly ....and if Chris's L213a has lasted as long as it has with him you can pretty much be sure its as strong as an ox ..................and is a better option than the ray

its all down to what you like the look of

Thanks very much for the help gents, will make my mind up while on holiday. Really surprised how much choice there is, thought it would be a real struggle to find something similar.

I was about to order a Volcano from Valenta direct but they wanted 90€ or so to ship it and for some reason that stuck in my throat.

In retrospect they have to make a decent packing crate to send it, so…

cliffhanger

Just recently bought a Valenta Cappuccino from Modellbau in Germany.

Unfortunately the UK suppliers of Valenta models want to charge the same in £'s as the price is in euro's.

The service from Jurgen at Modellbau was second to none- even phoning me for a chat.

His price for shipping was, if I remember, a very reasonable 40 euros.

I have got alot of options thanks to you gents. I am thinking it will be a toss up between the Foka 4 or the L213a. I wouldnt of thought that there would be alot of difference between the 2 performance wise.

There is a slight difference in foil, not sure how much difference that will make..

Two points to consider though:

1. The Inteco L-213A was designed as an aerobat from the get go. The Foka (I believe) was designed as a more conventional open class soarer...

2. IMO flaps are essential for a glider of this type: for landing, foil camber change and snap flap. The L-213 is available with or without flaps. Not sure about the Foka...
