What happened to this thread about Phil's Ellipse?

Well, the Ellipse got stashed away at the back of the barn/workshop - may take a while to re-appear

In the meantime...

something old/new/nice - feel free to post away on here - its all good :)

looking forward to video of JP putting this one through its paces

  • 5 months later...

7 months on...

and I finally made a start this evening

the joy of setting up a new set of servos - Futaba plugs converted to JR, horns trimmed - seeing them all wiggly for for the first time :)

bit by bit

aileron servos in, surface horns fitted

but why, no matter how hard you try, and how much masking tape you use, there's always a bit of epoxy ends up somewhere you dont want it? (but easily cleaned off before rock solid)

The new Ellipse wing is alive & wiggling !

wing servos, wiring, linkages all done now

servos horns & linkages are "backwards" compared to modern stuff - so they can fit under the fairings

Only really fiddly bit was the screw holes for the 9-pin connector, where the threads had been covered in epoxy - took ages to free them up so the screws would fit. One aileron wiper needed a bit of sanding - had to be a bit of imperfection somewhere.

and yes, the undersides are magenta (pink!) - red would have been better, but Greg's choice...

Nice close up pics Phil,

caused a slight tingling in the trouser department.

^_^

Must be because I was young and virile when I fitted out one of those.

Next up - the bit I really wasnt looking forward to - persuading the rudder pushrod (ali tube) to go through holes in 3x fuselage internal formers/supports - and not the holes for the aerial either. After many frustrating attempts, it finally needed an additional length of piano wire, and some tubing as a guide - got there in the end though. The rudder connects via a ball link screwed into a threaded stud in the pushrod - then the rudder is hinged on 2x long screws/bolts - clever stuff ! Meanwhile, the elevator pushrod, bellcrank & tail link were already factory fitted, just needed to fish out the clevis from somewhere in the fin.

First fitting of the tail was nice - the fit of the fin into the tail recess is so exact. This tail has carbon around the root that the last one didnt have - should be stronger.

So - next session its on to fitting & connecting fus servos - here's a quick preview. Yep, it really is designed for standard size sevos - fitted crossways !!! I'm using Hyperion DS16 FCDs - they look a bit lost. Greg was going to use something smaller still.

  • 3 weeks later...

fuselage servos done - as neat as I can make it

Wing incidence pins fitted, flap & aileron ends fettled so they dont clash when both "up". Not much more to do - lead in the nose, fit battery & Rx - then first full assembly & set CofG & control throws.

It'll fly as a "plain white tee" for a while - then it needs a nice new colour scheme

suggestions anyone?

I'm not sure you can beat the Mondrian, I loved that.

I liked the idea of Zebra stripes until I tried it (with some preprinted vinyl) - almost perfect camouflage against grey clouds. I guess it's in the 'dazzle ships' vein.

How about a 'Word Cloud' in various colours, such as these at Wordle? Come to think of it. I might use that myself next time round...

Nice Phil, it's making me think I should get mine out again.

If you put large blue blobs on the wing tips, you too could be called Mr Blobby

Right then - time to play with some possible colour schemes - comments & suggestions welcomed !

I'm thinking curves & ellipses...

first up - "Elliptical sunburst" - in various colours - I've seen plenty sunburst schemes, but never elliptical ones?

(The advantage of the red one is that "someone" might not then notice the red sunburst on the Habicht if/when I finally get to building it - except I prefer the blue)
